Most reviews have been glowing, saying its clearly the best small tablet out there. I just got mine. It is awesome size and weight. Display is certainly not retina, but seems better to me than my iPad1. Blacks are darker. Pixel is proportionally smaller. Its ok if I don't try to find them. Unfortunately, with a smaller display I sometimes need to look more closely, then I see... pixels.

But overall. Seems like a great device. I couldn't imagine using something as small as the Nexus 7. Wouldn't seem worth it.

So you can't use a tablet with a .9 inch smaller screen because it's "too small."

I guess that means you must use at least a Galaxy S3 or Note 2 because the iphone 5 screen is too small. Afterall, it's .8 inches smaller.

They're pulling corpses out of the water and these people are lining up to buy the latest gadget. I don't know what's more disgusting, the fact people in this area are buying or that Apple is selling.

Some of those could be buying it because their home computer was destroyed and they need a way to hop on the city wifi to let family know they aren't dead etc

and remember that 5th Ave is a huge tourist store. what happened doesn't have the personal connection to those folks.

----------

racist a bit?

Fact of life at the NYC stores. I'm shocked they sell to walkins anymore. I expected them to switch to the Chinese lotto system by now. Same in LA

----------

one thing i'm wondering, if you know you're the 800th person, why are you waiting in line? does a store even carry 800 iPads?

That store generally stocks for lines in the thousands.

----------

i think apple built like 15 white ipad mini's

they aren't selling out first because they are more popular, they are selling out first because there are so few out there, for whatever reason

Of course the white are more popular. They look just like the Galaxy Note so folks that can't afford the more expensive and better item are getting the cheap and tacky Mini to avoid being mocked like in the commercials

:D

----------

Lol you're getting played by Apple. Only 800 people and it sold out? That's probably only 1,000 units sold at one of their largest and most important stores.
.

Given that they are near ground zero and probably didn't get their full shipment I'd say the probable 800-1200 units is pretty good

----------

I'll even question if Apple with implement "retina" in the next iPad mini because the iPad 2 is still around. Until that gets killed off, I don't see iPad mini getting "retina."

So they add retina in a year kill off the iPad 2

----------

AAAAND, this can be a huge opportunity for many organizations aligned with and sponsoring the marathon to get people moving and motivated to help New York and New Jersey.

How dare they have a marathon right now. All those people should be helping clean up, not running a stupid race.

Are they going to end it at 5th Ave so folks can finish off by buying an iPad mini

How many in line were Asians buying them all up for resell?

lol, Asians are thrifty, but not idiots! we buy the iPhones and resell on CL or eBay, and that money basically pays for our data plan :) this strategy is better than ever now that the Nexus 4 unlocked is gonna be cheap

I stopped off at my local apple store to check out this fancy iPad Mini... and I noticed something very interesting:
Apple has the iPad Mini and the iPad 2 all together in the same area and the iPad 4 with Retina & iPhone 5 quite some distance away.

Not only that, but the iPads that they have next to the iPad Mini's that display information, pricing and specs are old ass iPad 2's without Retina Screens.

Apple Stores are playing it smart by keeping the high res screens completely away from the Mini.

The minute I stepped away from the iPad mini and onto the iPad 4, I made my decision and walked out of the store.

I was REALLY pushing for this iPad mini, but not this round. Maybe next time.

Selling out doesn't mean it was a huge success. All it means at this point is that they sold what they had. We have no idea how many they had. Maybe it was a big hit and maybe it wasn't, but that can't be determined with the limited info at this time. Maybe they only got 5 devices and sold all 5.

Technically, you're correct, but based on previous product launches, you don't truly believe that, do you? Anyway, we'll know soon how many they sold, when APPLE posts their sales figures for the first weekend.

Wrong sin. Your post sounds more like envy to me. As for what others do with their personal time and money, that's frankly none of your concern. ;)

Forgive him; the man has got to brush-up on his sins. ;)

You're not seriously suggesting retail stores should all shut down, are you? That would do wonders for the economy.
But since you're so fond of being judgmental, how's this:
How dare you be spending your time reading MacRumours on a day when people are struggling against Superstorm Sandy?! Disgusting! You should be busy making donations, or on a flight to the East Coast to help out, or at the very least reading about the storm on a general news site!:rolleyes::rolleyes:

Ouch !! :eek::eek:

Oh, please. We pull corpses out of the water all the time here in New York City. :)

But seriously, 8 million people, 40 dead, a couple hundred thousand without power, 65,000 of those restored today. I live 15 minutes away from this Apple Store, and while the hurricane was devastating for lots of folks relatively close by, for me and millions of others it was just a little rain and some strong gusty winds.

Disgusting, you say? Lots of shops are open for business in NYC, many since Tuesday and Wednesday. It really seems like you're just looking for an excuse to be mad about anything pertaining to Apple, yes?

It's disgusting....I'm an Apple guy and to even care about this now with all that is happening in the Tri-State is gluttony.

dont know if you know but theres awful things happening all over the world everyday...but do we have to stop buying ?

----------

I thank G-d I am not you.

Mmm 40 plus killed here in riyadh, burned alive in a tanker accident.... are you not carrying on with your daily life.. or is it you only care about American citizens...men women and children being tortured and slaughtered in Burma.. for past 30 plus years... and the list goes on...Jeez

----------

racist a bit?

care to expand on how this is racist ?

I've been using my Mini all day and one of my main concerns was the screen, I have both an iPhone 4S and iPad 3 so have now become accustomed to the retina display but I have to say I was pleasantly surprised, the Mini screen is nowhere near as bad as you might first think. It's obviously not retina but it definitely hasn't put me off...I'd suggest looking for yourself before slagging it off, you might be surprised.

so0 you have an ipad3...what was your purpose on buying a ipad mini ?

1. THis is the worst Apple Product they have made...this Screen really does suck big time. And its slow as ****!!! ugh....

2. Grand Central didn't even enough White IPad Minis for the first 50. They ONLY had FOUR (4) White IPads!!!! WTH....

3. I'm one of the biggest apple fans and even I'm disappointed....

so is this the first apple purchase of such a device ?.. or do you already have an ipad of sorts.. if so why are you crictising something you don't really need ?

I don't see what there is to be excited about.. Honestly, it's a smaller form factor with 1.5 year hardware inside. Maybe I'm missing something.

I generally love Apple hardware but the iPad mini has nothing new, nothing innovative and nothing exciting about it. It is rushed-out product designed to fill a demographic segment.

When you hold one in your hand, you might change your mind.

Does anyone here think for a second that Apple doesn't precisely engineer stock levels in the first weeks of a launch so that there are reports that 'xyz product has sold out'? When iPad 3 launched, my local Apple store had crateloads of stock from day 1 but they were still handing out tickets to 'reserve' devices and an empty line was roped-off...you know, just in case there was a stampede to grab the last iPad from the pile of 4000. Creating the impression of short supply, when you control the largest electronic supply chain in the world is, well, kind of ballsy.

Call me naive, but with an initial roll-out in 34 countries, and more to come, I somehow doubt that APPLE is 'sitting' on inventory, just to create an artificial shortage. Not being able to make 'm fast enough sounds like a much more plausible scenario.

.....I believe that by Christmas these things will be all over the place, especially under certain trees.

I'm hoping there'll be a White 64GB/WiFi Mini under our tree.....been dropping some, ever so subtle hints here and there.....:)

Well of course the isheep flocked to buy. I'm not getting a mini until it has retina screen I predict they are going to release a retina version in march or April. And I will laugh at those who rushed to buy it now.

People are powerless, homeless, starving, but hey lets not go and get them help, lets stay in line to buy a useless consumer good! You suck humanity, you suck.

Internet capable devices (phones mostly) like the iPad have empowered this generation of people unlike any before it. Social media has helped revolutionize the mideast.

Besides, why not apply your 'don't buy an iPad - feed the homeless' theory to evening? Do you buy your kids a toy or two for christmas? How dare you? You should instead use that money to feed homeless kids. Don't go to movies either, or buy an ice cream cone, or do ANYTHING more than what's absolutly essential for you to survive, and use the REST of your resources helping the homeless!!!

Be a decent human being and help out around the city that you live in which was just destroyed?

And, how do you know for certain that 799 out those 800 people who stood in line that day aren't already helping out in some shape or form?

They don't. Apple doesn't want a single customer to walk away empty handed, esp. when it's an impulse purchase product. Do individual stores like to have a visual inventory tracking system so they can tell customers exactly what models are in stock? Yes. That's why they have the cards.

I agree the mini seemed non- innovative & lacking. But, personally, after I played with one I had to have one (already have an iPad 3). I wasn't a champion of 7" tablets. I am now. The mini is gonna be huge -- but unfortunately at the expense if the low end iPad 4 models. And I really don't know why anyone would want an iPad 2 anymore.

With a number of Manhattan Apple stores closed due to lack of power, one would assume that the mini would sell out quickly at the 5th location.

OR maybe ...

Apple said OK we can manufacture a million iPad Minis for product launch; How many countries do we have to launch the product in to make it appear that demand for the product is high and the product is sold out everywhere;)

Gotta love all the holier-than-thou *******s making comments about waiting in line after a disaster. They must be posting from their phones between hammer strokes as they help rebuild houses.

Or while they wait for their next porn video to load. What a world we live in.

Wow good for you! Do you feel better about yourself now? Will you feel proud sitting in your mom's basement with your shiny new stunning retina display iPad mini while the dredges of society suffer at the hands of the hideous, vile non-retina version?

Why people care what others spend their spare money on is just mind-boggling. Grow up.

Meh, maybe that is your only store, at the Eaton's Centre downtown store in Toronto, the iPad mini was the first table on the right hand side as you enter in with the Retina 13" MacBook on the left side, the iPad 4th Generation was at 2nd table on the right side of the store, so the Retina products aren't exactly far away.

I don't think they updated the display information iPad at all as the iPad 2 serves that function just fine. For all the Apple products around the store.
