Shockingly you could buy a retina MBP and a Microsoft Surface Pro with 128gb SSD, 8gb ram and support for wacom pen/digitiser for the same price.
This one is just too much $kerching Somehow I don't think they'll be making too many of them. ---------- You need to see some of the amazing work of Sam Spratt. ---------- They would be better off buying a 24" Cintiq

Some people complain about price here but lets put it on the paper
Modbook = $3,499 Macbook pro 13" = $1,699.00 Wacoom Cintix 12" = $980 Total = $2,679.00 Difference 3499-2679= $820 So $820 difference is for following things: Modbook Build Kit 13.3-inch Modbook Pro enclosure conversion kit Includes: - Lightweight, precision-machined aluminum AlphaBody™ core and enclosure - High-speed ExoConnect™ system for base system integration - Radio frequency and electromagnetic shielding solution for optimal pen experience - Built-in 3D-GripFeet™ - Built-in magnetic-catch pen garage Screen Assembly Paper-emulating ForceGlass™ screen optimized for the Modbook Pro - Etched surface for paper-like feel - Low-sparkle, non-glare glass for improved light transmissivity - Scratch-resistant and chemically strengthened Wacom® pen tablet digitizer - Pen pressure: 1024 levels - Recognition rate: 133 points/second - Recognition resolution: 0.01mm Modbook Digitizer Pen - 2 programmable side buttons - Digital eraser - 11 replaceable pen tips: 3 Studio Nibs, 3 Pencil Nibs and 5 Felt Nibs Software - Modbook Pro System Software 5 - QuickClicks™ on-screen shortcut and keyboard software - QuickFlip™ screen-rotation software Modbok Pro Protection Plan Covers complete system. Includes: - One-year manufacturer’s limited hardware warranty on Modbook Pro components - One-year warranty-equivalent service plan on MacBook Pro base system I don't think they have to high margine when you compare all this plus labor work to make damn thing and to add cost of transport. So price is totally in scale with price if you buy Macbook + Wacoom Only thing is that space wise you will need way more space to carry both Mac and Wacoom. This combo 2 in 1 is interesting... Maybe if they could dump price for lets say 100bucks that would be great...

The iPad is a $500 entertainment/light productivity device. This thing is a Macbook Pro modded with a Wacom digitizer for artists and professionals. No, it won't sell like the iPad, or have the same mass market appeal. But for $3500, it's not supposed to. |

That's not really not accurate pricing difference as you are not getting a Cintiq 12" which would be an 'extra' screen. So the difference is actually $1800 for those features you describe. + you have to remove the cost of the components they take out of the macbook pro (aluminium casing, screen etc..) as you do not get to keep these, so they must be offset against the components in the modbook pro, and so the difference rises $2000 or more for the conversion. And the day I or anyone should be grateful for a 1 year warranty on a $3500 system is the day the sun turns cold. Even the Cintiq's come with a 3 year warranty as standard. Going forward into a world of touch screen laptops and computers in the next wave of windows machines, and possibly mac's if the windows model proves to be successful, where the base price for much the same is less than half the price of the modbook pro, means it has a serious up hill struggle even if it was priced closer to the rMBP.

Compare to this beast the iPad is a toy. It's akin to comparing a Sierra/Silverado to a Topkick/Kodiak. This thing ain't for playing angry birds, unless you're a big wig executive who has a Mac Pro just for screen savers while the engineers working for you have to jury rig a Mac Mini server farm. But I digress...

Well, after about an hour of sketching out on location with a magnificent 64-pound Cintiq and a Honda generator, my arms started getting tired. This is portable. Thats the point. Last edited by Cavepainter; Nov 9, 2012 at 01:28 PM. Reason: content |

For any artist who wants to zoom in/out, that will be a huge drawback. So this ends up being a gimped tablet and a amputated laptop. I'll wait until they have a good offering or Apple and Wacom finally partner to make a coherent product. |

It could be a very useful item for some people, but I think the price is not realistic.

I've considered one of these in the past. My primary concern was quality control and poor warranty service if anything does go wrong. That's $2500 and it still needs an actual computer. Personally I prefer that. For lighter sketching an ipad would work too. It has some limitations, but I expect that will improve.

This is extremely expensive and all, however I tend to think that with the new Macbooks, so the entire thing is rather relative.
