I don't think they have to high margine when you compare all this plus labor work to make damn thing and to add cost of transport.

I could slap a herp-a-derp on a darp-a-durr and you still wouldn't get that these are two entirely separate products for two entirely separate markets, and can't be directly compared to one another.

The iPad is a $500 entertainment/light productivity device. This thing is a Macbook Pro modded with a Wacom digitizer for artists and professionals. No, it won't sell like the iPad, or have the same mass market appeal. But for $3500, it's not supposed to.

That's not really not accurate pricing difference as you are not getting a Cintiq 12" which would be an 'extra' screen.

So the difference is actually $1800 for those features you describe.

+ you have to remove the cost of the components they take out of the macbook pro (aluminium casing, screen etc..) as you do not get to keep these, so they must be offset against the components in the modbook pro, and so the difference rises $2000 or more for the conversion.



And the day I or anyone should be grateful for a 1 year warranty on a $3500 system is the day the sun turns cold.


Even the Cintiq's come with a 3 year warranty as standard.


Going forward into a world of touch screen laptops and computers in the next wave of windows machines, and possibly mac's if the windows model proves to be successful, where the base price for much the same is less than half the price of the modbook pro, means it has a serious up hill struggle even if it was priced closer to the rMBP.

Probably the same people who bought the previous stylused-uped Macbooks. It's not meant to be a huge seller, but there is a niche market who'll eat it up.

For the wealthy artist or those with wealthy patronage. A Wacom Cintiq can be had for under $800. For the starving artist type, there's a $300 alternative that only works with Windows. Of course, with both, computer not included.

Excuse me while I wipe the drool off my keyboard. I want this Modbook Pro. Yer iPadders can play around with yer toys. Compare to this beast the iPad is a toy. It's akin to comparing a Sierra/Silverado to a Topkick/Kodiak. This thing ain't for playing angry birds, unless you're a big wig executive who has a Mac Pro just for screen savers while the engineers working for you have to jury rig a Mac Mini server farm. I guess this is a different company, after a buyout. The original intention for the Modbook pro was multitouch plus wacom pen.

For any artist who wants to zoom in/out, that will be a huge drawback. So this ends up being a gimped tablet and a amputated laptop.

I'll wait until they have a good offering or Apple and Wacom finally partner to make a coherent product.

I've considered one of these in the past. My primary concern was quality control and poor warranty service if anything does go wrong. That's $2500 and it still needs an actual computer. Personally I prefer that. For lighter sketching an ipad would work too. It has some limitations, but I expect that will improve.

This is extremely expensive and all, however I tend to think that with the new Macbooks, so the entire thing is rather relative.
