Upgrade mid 2011 imac with windows xp to windows 7 ultimate

I have a 27" mid 2011 3.4ghz i7, 12gb ram, 256gb ssd, with the 2gb video card. I want to use a program that is windows based. I have an enterprise copy of windows xp professional 32 bit that i installed with bootcamp and got it to work O.K. but not superb. Through my university I can purchase windows 7 ultimate upgrade for $14. Two questions:

1. Will I be able to use an upgrade version for windows so that I don't have to buy a full version that is more expensive?

2. Will I be able to access an external thunderbolt drive from the windows OS?
