Hi Everyone,

I've only once had this before, a couple of weeks ago, but now 4 times today, and apart from that, never in the last 4 years.

The screen goes black and the computer turns off, showing the error "Your computer restarted because of a problem. Press a key or wait a few seconds to continue starting up". It then goes on to restart.

Using the console, the last few entries before it reboots are:

Looking at the last few errors, it could be something to do with the memory riser A?

Searching for that in the console gets me:

In the system profiler, i'm getting
DIMM Riser A/DIMM 3 ECC Errors

So i guess it's that - Riser A/DIMM 3?
Would you say the others DIMM 2 & 1 are ok?

I've had a look for 3,1 memory - and Crucial do 2x2GB for £120 ... would this be the part?

(DDR2 PC2-6400 • CL=5 • Fully Buffered • ECC • DDR2-800 • 1.8V • 256Meg x 72 • • Part #: CT774458)

Cheers for any help

start by removing ram chips, rebooting and then stress testing.

seems like riser A is affected quite badly.

you're getting no errors from the 2nd riser card?

Hi Spoonie,

Thanks, and no, it seems to be only riser A. And when i search for Riser, i get this ... apologies for the repetition of it all ... but makes me think i've found my problem!

I guess it could be the riser itself? Shall i take out DIMM 3 (and it's pair?) and then do the stress test? I guess if i take out DIMM 3 and it's all ok, then i've got my answer?!

Many thanks
SlaterK

if your machine runs acceptably with only riser B installed, take all the chips out (standard anti-static measures apply) - and try all the chips from your A riser.

if you have no problems with the chips from your A riser working in the B riser, you can rule out faulty ram.

In the original log above it also states some errors in Riser 1&2, but only a few times.

I think doing what the guy above me recommended is the best now.

it's also worth a shot to swap risers, just to be sure it's not the connector at the bottom.

i had some ram issues in my last 3,1 and it ended up being two bad chips. what a pita to figure it out, though.

Hi guys,
Thanks a lot, very much appreciated.

I have ordered two new memory modules (I've got a big job on right now and so time is tight) and I'll swap them out for dim three and one and see if that works.

If not, I'll swap things around and see if I can isolate the problem.

Cheers
