Remotely connect to my Mac Mini

I want to be able to remotely connect/control my Mac Mini.

I can use Screen Sharing etc when I am on the same LAN as the Mini, or use VNC when I want access from my iPad or a Windows based machine (again on the same LAN).

When it comes to connecting over a WAN from my Windows PC at work, I have tried TeamViewer, but cannot connect if the Mac Mini is in sleep - which it would be while Im at work etc! I do not want the Mini to be on all day long when it dosnt need to be!

Are there any other solutions where if I connect remotely it will wake my Mac Mini from sleep etc?

Have you checked 'wake on LAN' in energy saver prefs?

Yes Ive checked that.
Ive been reading up on Teamviewer and it appears Im not the only one with the issue, so I think its the software rather then the Mac.
