Why doesn't Spotlight find an installed App ?

There seems to be a problem with Spotlight, it just doesnt show up applications, for example Firefox and many others although installed.

I dont know how indexing files works, but it would be usefull to know. A related issue is when I boot another version of OSX from external drive, Spotlight messes up, but this time I did not boot any external drive.

Check Spotlight preferences and make sure there's a checkmark under Search Results for Applications. You can also try to reindex Spotlight.
