Out of curiosity, has anyone who grandfathered their unlimited data to their iPhone 5 tried just tethering without going through at&t? They would find out would they not?

I just tried turning on the hotspot on my iphone 5 and got a popup telling me to contact AT&T to set it up. No doubt they will tell me I have to switch to a tiered plan. I currently have the grandfathered unlimited plan. I have used the MyWi tethering app on my previous iPhones and will do so on the 5 once we get a jailbreak.

If u have the unlimited and get the tether plan, AT&T will convert your data plan to 4GB. I can't have the grandfather unlimited data plan.

It happened to me.

LTE Hotspot speed is awesome!!! 12Mb down and 22Mb Up within NYC area.
