Hey guys, be gentle, lol. Just starting to play around with phones, done alot of reading but can't figure this out. Bought 2 phones, one 3g and a 3gs, both are stuck in recovery mode, I know the 3g is version 4.1 or 4.2, no idea what the 3gs is. I downloaded tinyumbrella but still can't get the blobs, redsnow is no help either so am I screwed? Will I have to update to 6.0? :( Just in the process of installing iTunes 9.2, I read I needed that.

Thanks.

The 3g can always be restored to 4.2.1, which is the last official release.

It appears that for the 3GS 4.1 might still be signed.

to get blobs that might be saved:

connect phone

open TU
in advanced tab make sure Request SHSH form Cydia is checked.

Now on TU main page hit save SHSH

If nothing shows up than Cydia does not have blobs for the phone.

You can try to kick them out of recovery with TU or redsn0w.

If no blobs are available you can try iFaith (windows) to create the blobs.
But my guess id that you need a working phone for it.

It doesn't tell me what version it will update to in iTunes, so how can I see what version it will use?

These weren't jailbroken, already tried the Cydia thing.

I'll play around with TU somemore. On TU, it has a recovery button, so do I fix recovery or enter recovery?

Thanks.

if you hit restore it will update to the last signed firmware, for the 3G 4.2.1
for the 3GS it will be 6.01

so the 3g you can restore to 4.2.1 in itunes with restore

for the 3GS you can download the 4.1 IPSW here:
http://www.iclarified.com/entry/index.php?enid=750

Put the phone in DFU mode:
Connect phone
Hold home and power until phone turns off
keep holding both for another 3 seconds
than release Power while holding home for another 10 seconds

The phone will be in DFU mode, screen completely black, and itunes should report a phone in recovery mode (actually its in DFU)

Now in iTunes hit ALT-restore (mac) or SHIFT-restore (win) to select your downloaded 4.1 IPSW and restore with that.

Thanks, I'll try that.

I tried to load up earlier versions but kept getting error messages on the 3g.
