It's out -- appeared along with iTunes 11 in Software Update.

(Display Port (not Thunderbolt), 27" display). Ran software update, it downloaded -- then nothing…

Do I need to run something to install the new firmware? How do you check your display's firmware version.

Was your display connected?

I ran mine and the audio ceased for a few seconds then it came back, then the display shut off for a few seconds and that was that.

Yes it was/is connected. When you "ran yours" all you did hit the <Update> button in the AppStore app, correct? That's what I did, but didn't stay in the room to notice what happened...
