FCPX: Where's the Export progress bar?

I'm new to FCPX. I just tried exporting a short movie, and stated Desktop as my destination. 20 minutes later, I still don't see an exported .mov file. Yesterday, I exported the same movie directly to email. Again, no progress bar, but after 5 minutes, Apple Mail automatically launched with the exported movie as an attachment.

Is this "background processing" a bug, a feature, a user setting?
