I guess this isn't the mac that will run everything at max settings at native resolution
It seems to run everything at max settings w/ 30 FPS which is pretty good. Crysis, The Witcher 2, etc., not sure what the deal with X-Plane is, but it does well in other high end games.

I hear you. I will post results using Adobe Premiere Pro CS6 (Mercury Playback Engine) and After Effects CS6 (Ray Trace Engine) before today is over. Bonus: I'll have some DaVinci Resolve results, too.

Thanks again for doing the testing. Looking forward to it!

WoW: Mists of Pandaria. This is our Narache Village Totem to Tree to Totem test results for various Macs. All were running Ultra Preset.

iMac 3.4 680MX
2560x1440 = 86.7 FPS average
1898x1068 = 111.8 FPS average
1456x820 = 118.2 FPS average

iMac 2.9 650M (got similar numbers for rMBP 15")
1920x1080 = 58.2 FPS average
1456x820 = 71.0 FPS average

2011 iMac 3.4 Radeon HD 6970M
1456x820 = 59.7 FPS average
(will get more examples of this Tuesday but clearly slower than 680MX)

Mac Pro 3.3 Radeon HD 5870
2560x1440 = 57.4 FPS average
1898x1068 = 70.4 FPS average
1456x820 = 78.9 FPS average

Mac Pro 3.3 GeForce GTX 680 Classified
2560x1440 = 107.5 FPS average (only beats 680MX on top rez)
1898x1068 = 108.2 FPS average
1456x820 = 111.2 FPS average

Awesome. Thank you!

Honestly Far Cry 3 would be really curious to see. Anyone have it to give it a go?

Most desktops have difficulty running X-Plane 10 with high settings. The 680MX is struggling with it, but I tweaked my settings so I'm averaging between 25-35 fps.

I was actually thinking of OEM licenses. No way I'd ever recommend anyone to buy the retail.

We agree on that.

Remember that the iMacs have used mobile graphics for a while, and that it's only very recently that they've become really powerful. So bragging of sorts is only natural.

That is a good point, but it needed the option to be in proper alignment with the use of a high screen resolution.

Only got to Premiere Pro testing before I left for a concert with my family.

Here's a teaser with much more coming either tomorrow or Monday. Using a 30 second movie (8 clips, Apple ProRes 422 (HQ), 1,920 x 1,080), I rendered various effects. Here are two of them:

Gaussian Blur
iMac 3.4 680MX = 13.0 sec
iMac 2.9 650M = 17.5 sec
Mac Pro 3.3 Radeon HD 5870 = 10.3 sec
Mac Pro 3.3 GeForce GTX 680 Classified = 9.7 sec

Fast Color Correction
iMac 3.4 680MX = 13.6 sec
iMac 2.9 650M = 15.2 sec
Mac Pro 3.3 Radeon HD 5870 = 14.6 sec
Mac Pro 3.3 GeForce GTX 680 Classified = 11.7 sec

Wow, great work on those results Barefeats. Cool to see your benches match mine and that I didn't somehow hallucinate the results and let everyone down :p

A few more gaming results from this afternoon~ Outstanding results from S.T.A.L.K.E.R (LOVE that game and while it is slightly older, is very demanding visually), Skyrim (completely solid), RAGE, and Alice 2 (beautiful on max quality.)

Skyrim: (2560x1440, maximum quality, 8x AA, 16x AF)
Using fraps I traversed most of the continent and a few dungeons and recorded the average framerates. 90% of the time it was maxed at 60fps, and occasionally dropped to mid 50's when turning or in places of lots of smoke, mist or light. Never dropped below 50 the entire time!

S.T.A.L.K.E.R.:Call of the Pripyat: (DX 11, 2560x1440, maximum quality "Ultra" preset, Ultra HDAO SSAO, Tessellation On) Official benchmark provided by Gameworld.

0x MSAA
Day - 71.4 Avg fps
Night - 69.3 Avg fps
Rain - 72.8 Avg fps
SunShafts - 55.9 Avg fps

2x MSAA
Day - 54.3 Avg fps
Night - 54.3 Avg fps
Rain - 57.2 Avg fps
SunShafts - 39.7 Avg fps

4x MSAA
Day - 46.9 Avg fps
Night - 46.5 Avg fps
Rain - 49.6 Avg fps
SunShafts - 34.1 Avg fps

RAGE (2560x1440, 4x AA, Texture Cache Large, Texture Detail On, AF On)
Another one staying at 58-60 Avg fps that never seemed to drop below 57. Had difficulty enabling the console, so I used fraps for this one. A bit of texture pop-in, but quite a nice game visually. 8K textures work just great and requires about 1.5GB of VRAM, but 16K textures currently require more than 3GB which is more than the 680MX has available.

Alice:Madness Returns (2560x1440, All settings enabled, 4x AA, 16x AF, PhysX on High)
I was a huge fan of the original Alice and have always loved the beautiful art-noire style of the sequel. The game is originally locked at 30fps, so after a quick ini edit I uncapped the fps. With the 680mx the game essentially stays at 60 with the slight dip 4-6 frames when turning and the motion blur kicks in. Those that don't like motion and disable it will find the frame rate stays at 60 permanently. In areas with a lot of liquid effects or smoke, the frame rate can drop to 45-55, but still maintains a perfect playability.

Thank you folks for tests!

Please...

What about heat and noise on iMac 21.5 an 27?

Could be interesting to see also the differences from 680MX vs. 675MX.

Yes, I would like to know this as well, I did ask before and only got a vague reply. After playing WoW for a few minutes on a rMBP, you can clearly hear the fans spin up, and it is pretty audible. How does the 27" iMac with the 680mx compare ?

Ahh, thank you very much. :) Two critical games for me to know, seems stable enough to the point where I'm beginning to consider getting it once again to remove the stress from my 2007 bottom line iMac.

How has the heat held up through the games btw? Still keeping cool? Any screen issues?

Bf3, skyrim, fallout and maybe arma 2, but I doubt I'll be able to get all of them done tomorrow :p

Sounds like with those we'll have a pretty thorough analysis with that topping it off. :D

Then comes the hard part, deciding to get or not to get. x_x
