Apple TV and AirPlay when TV off

Hi

I'm thinking about getting an Apple TV 3 and was wondering, if I was to buy a DAC (such as http://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B005HFTUO..._ws_gb?ie=UTF8 ), and not have my TV switched on, will airplay still work though the optical port? I remember reading a while ago that sometimes the Apple TV won't work if the TV is off. Is this still the case or will my solution work?

Airplay wakes up ATV2 and plays automatically.

You can plug the AppleTV into it with the optical cable included, and the TV doesn't need to be on.

There are also HDMI options.
