I was having issues with my iPhone 5 with dropped WiFi connections and slow speeds as well. I was able to get a replacement and the issues have gone away.

I have Verizon FiOS and they use a proprietary router/modem so getting a replacement for that wasn't really an option. All of my other devices were having no issues connecting and/or WiFi speeds.

I have an iPhone 5 and an Airport Extreme (5th Gen.) and I have the same exact problem as the OP, so it's not a "quality of router" issue. Additionally, it occurs on Unifi equipment at a vendor that I visit quite often.

The similarities stem from the routers being on WPA2/AES.

I'm going to the Apple Store on Saturday to have it exchanged. I personally have a 2011 MBA, a 2010 MBP, two Apple TVs (2nd Gen.), and 2 atom PCs on wifi. Additionally I am working on about 35 work laptops (range of OS's from XP to Win8) and they all connect to the Airport Extreme with absolutely no issue.

UPDATE

I went to the Apple Store at 9am (EST) and my iPhone 5 was exchanged.
Since then my Wifi issues have "surprisingly" stopped on my home network (with WPA2).

Congrats. It's certainly cheaper to get a phone replaced while under warranty than to buy a new router that you may not need after all.

Well, my next course of action is to contact apple tech support again and or go back to see a genius at the store. I would rather have an iphone replaced than have to go out and get a new router. I was looking up information regarding the next IOS update and it seems that it won't come out for at least until 2013 and perhaps a few months after that so I would rather not wait for a possible fix.

I wish.... I have Apple Care+ and I wanted to return my iPhone or Exchange it (after having it for 17 days) and they denied it because of the smallest scratch on the front glass.

WiFi at work? I'll get 1-5 seconds of internet before it just spins (max reception). WiFi at home? Church? College? Parent's house? No problem. lol.

Wow that's disappointing. I keep hearing iOS 6.1 will fix WiFi but ... not for months?! Doh!

Update: I went to the Apple store after speaking with tech support again which told me to go ahead and exchange the phone for a new one. I get to the store and they take notes on the same issues again and proceed to get me a new phone. While setting up the new phone they realize that 6.0.3 came out today as it's updating on it which is suppose to "improve wireless/wifi functionality". I get home and try the phone without restoring my settings and it's the same. I restore the settings and no change yet. Maybe I should try getting a few different routers and seeing if I have better luck.

I got two new iPhone 5s last week and both had wifi issues. They would work fine for a while, but would randomly slow down to about 1Mbps, and wouldn’t pick up speed until I toggled wifi on/off. I got two replacements and both of them also have the same issue, but are capable of picking up speed by themselves after being slow for a while. Meanwhile, my iPhone 4 running iOS 5 has never had a wifi issue and is working perfectly.

There’s also 180-page iPhone 5 wifi issues discussion thread ongoing since September here. https://discussions.apple.com/thread...=2730&tstart=0
