Apple TV 2, downscale 1080p content?
If I buy a movie that is 1080p from iTunes, I know my Apple TV 3 can play it, but will my Apple TV 2 just downscale it to 720? I just want to be sure if I purchase a movie I can watch it everywhere. Thanks folks!

I have bought and downloaded a number of TV shows and movies from iTunes in 1080p and am able to playback the files on my AppleTV v2.

Even if it can't downscale you are good to go. When you buy an HD video from iTunes you have access to both 720p and 1080p versions. If you stream it from iTunes in the Cloud on your ATV 2 it'll stream the 720p version.
In your iTunes preferences you can pick your preferred downloaded version. You can switch between the two if you want to download both 720p and 1080p. I tend to simply stream content directly from Apple on my ATV so its never been an issue. Hope that cleared things up rather than confused things.

I can also say from personal experience that movies encoded with handbrake on the ATV3 setting (1080p) play just fine in 720p on our ATV2s.
