That I did. Lived in Vegas over 25 years now, and a couple weekends ago was my first time ever going up to the top.

I have to ask: how'd you do it? Set the shutter speed to 20 seconds, stand still then walk off?

Playing around with the EF 50mm prime I just got for Christmas.
As always, critique welcome. I took several pics of this figurine at different apertures and with 2 different backgrounds. I'll post more in the following days and hope to get a sense for what you all think works best.

Fire a flash on a long exposure, run out of shot the moment the flash fires.

The wider the aperture the more filled out you'll be, but you lose definition/bloom a little.

I've done a whole bunch of these now, it's easily my favourite technique and probably my signature style, a few are here:

I still can't convince myself to go and take photos in the snow, so here is another from autumn - an ecosystem on a rock. Lighting conditions were pretty terrible, but I still think it's neat.

By using shallow focus, you're pulling the viewer's eye towards the sharp area. Unfortunately, your statuette (a whirling dervish?) has a kind of soft-focus look about it, just because of the way it was made. So the effect doesn't quite work, IMO...

I kinda see what you're saying. The statuette (indeed a whirling dervish) is kind of a soft finish (very little detail or edges).

Back to drawing table...(I do appreciate the feedback, as always).

Here's something else. Taken earlier today in the backyard. Still getting used to the DOF with this 50mm 1.4 I just got.
