Apple TV question

Hi all

Just received Apple TV as a gift and was wondering if it is possible to access my iTunes library from my iMac on Apple TV while they are connected to different wireless networks?

Nope, need to be on the same network.

Yes you can - with iTunes in the cloud/iTunes Match. All your iTunes purchased music will automatically be available from icloud. If you want to add music you've ripped from CDs then you pay an annual subscription to upload music via iTunes Match. That way your computer doesn't even have to be switched on to listen to your music.

While that would work for music it does not with video. Most iTunes library's contain both.

A lot of iTunes purchased movies are now available from the cloud too but not ripped DVDs.
There are apps you can get that will allow you to access non-DRM video files that are stored on a PC/Mac via an iOS device then stream via Airplay to the Apple TV. Can't remember the names of the apps though but a quick Google should find one.

PLEX is the most popular, StreamToMe is another pretty good one.

Both require clients to be running at all times on the host machine, then can be accessed by your iOS devices anywhere in the world.
