I found these "rules" funny for a 13yr iPhone owner

or for the lazy
basically no porn, no googling questions you wouldn't ask your parents, no texting after 7:30 on week days, 9 on weekends, no calling unless you would call their land-line, you HAVE to pick-up the phone everytime, can't take it with you to school, can't use it in public, can't talk about other people, she always knows the passwords, can't say anything you wouldn't say in person, can't take a lot of photos/videos (wtf?), has to download new songs that his friends haven't discovered yet (really?) must play brain games now and then, so basically it's like a dictatorship lol way to have faith in your kids!

I agree 100% with all those rules. They may seem harsh to some, but they teach a lot of lessons. The kid isn't complaining according to the articles I read so why are people here complaining??

It's impossible to remember everything, I take loads of pictures and videos to remember events in life, I'd rather have pictures and videos to look at then re-imagining what happened... I take pictures of even the tiny stuff, so that when I'm older I can look back, why would anyone impose a rule like that?

My thoughts on the article: Some kids need harsh rules because they're strong headed, stubborn, etc. and won't learn any other way while others learn quicker and are more likely to obey authority. It all depends on the kid.

It seems more like she made the contract to get 15 minutes of fame, most of the rules are ok but you have to listen to music your friends don't know about yet? That doesn't seem a little bit unfair to you?

Those are very similar to the rules my 13 yr old grandson has. It's very simple. Either live by those rules or have no mobile phone at all. What would you choose given those options?

I always found the old "unless you have kids you wouldn't understand" line insulting. It implies that you lack empathy, that there's no one you care for, old or young. Why shouldn't a seventeen year old express his/her opinion?

Personally, I would have either bought him the phone if I thought he was responsible enough, i.e. he already understood that it's not right to bully others or send photos of his tackle, or not, if I didn't think he'd learned those rules yet.

The rules laid down aren't just applicable to a smart phone, so why make them dependant on it?

That's fine but I'd bet you don't have kids either. It's not that he lacks empathy it's that he doesn't fully comprehend the situation. It's really that simple.

Also, no one is saying that he can't express his opinion. What we're saying is that this is why he doesn't understand.

Maybe I misunderstood your "zero room to talk" line.

I deliberately left out whether I have children, my point was that it isn't relevant to someone expressing an opinion and having an insight.

It is relevant because anyone with kids quickly realizes that every kid is different and you can't judge other parents since you don't live with that particular kid.

We're not saying us parents know how to raise that kid and you don't. We're saying that NONE of us here know how to raise that kid.

What makes the non-parents different is that they haven't realized that yet.

So yeah, I'm saying you can't express an opinion about that mom. And I, as a parent...can't either!

I believe some of these rules are excessive. It is logical that there are some rules, but a contract?

In the end, he's going to be rebellious. And when he's older, he'll definitely do all the things that were forbidden.

Congrats to all parents for contributing and teaching Rules to any child.

"Rules" and "caring" from a parenting standpoint are for the most part synonymous.
