Didn't say they didn't pay ANY taxes - specifically talking about income taxes.

And since I only began working last year in October, my wife and I fell into the lower part of that 50%.....and guess what - we received all our federal income tax money back in our return effectively paying $0 in income tax.
Income tax is only a small part of the taxes you pay.

We'll see how that works in the USA now that the "middle class" didn't get their taxes raised but the "wealthy did". Because of course the "wealthy" consume more government services so they should pay more taxes, right?

No, they should pay more in taxes because the burden of paying for government should fall upon people equally. They have a lower marginal utility for the money than a poor family.

This is all pretty basic.

Cause stuff needs to be cut, and cutting stuff angers unions, special interest groups, etc. Do you realize that the system is set up to elect those who spend more and kick out those who cut spending?

Obama doesn't think anything needs to be cut. He would like carte blanche to spend more and more.

Income tax is only a small part of the taxes you pay.

Actually - I live in Texas. Just recently purchased a home, so I am only now paying property taxes but I'd reckon quite a few people in the 50% rent as well....

State to state would be different but on a federal level you pay income tax, SS, medicare.....that's it. And just about 50% of that is income tax.

Now property taxes are a different story. So are sales taxes. But both of those involve a choice by the consumer to purchase something. I.E. if someone is too poor to pay taxes, they most likely won't own a home or the home will cost very little.

But I appreciate you telling me how much I pay in taxes....

Plus everyone's social security tax is going up 2%. So much for only incomes of $250,000 and above going up. $1500 is important to my family.

Although it's not really "going up", but a temporary deduction is expiring. Not the same thing.

This is all pretty basic.

But the burden of paying for a government not looking to spend responsibly and looking to benefit the poor disproportionately shouldn't be the way to go - when it is in fact how things are.

I agree - everyone should have an equal load when it comes to infrastructure, education, defense. But when the government is paying out big unemployment benefits, spends willy nilly on government programs that do everything short of reward people for not working - that's not the type of government ANY of us should be paying for.

Oh and it's no where close to proportionate.....the rich have carried the load for decades and the load continues getting heavier.

^^^ The main reason I like the Republican party better. They understand this. Taxing and spending more is just a bad idea because government is inefficient by design.

Wrong, they just shift the spending. Look at what Bush did on his way out the door.

LOL - Sure it is.

No, it's not. We are returning to the same rate it's been all along except for this short-term reduction.

I love the lower class tea party people complaining about rich getting taxed more. It's like voting against yourself.

That's because I don't vote for "myself". I vote for my country.....

This is the type of attitude that's causing the instability and ruin we are finding ourselves in.

I'm not voting so Obama can give me more money - I'm voting so I have a chance to make something of myself - follow in my father's footsteps and make my own way.

“When the people find that they can vote themselves money that will herald the end of the republic.” -Benjamin Franklin

----------

Believe the poster specified income tax.

Top 1% paid 36.73% of all income taxes.
Top 5% paid 58.66% of all income taxes.
Top 10% paid 70.47% of all income taxes.
Top 25% paid 87.30% of all income taxes.
Top 50% paid 97.75% of all income taxes.
Bottom 50% paid 2.25% of all income taxes.

I did - the words "income tax" were on every line.....I understand though - that partisan rage hits you and all you see is red (or I suppose blue in this case).

and look at what Clinton did to "balance" the budget and generate a "surplus".

Nope. Try again. Your assumption is that the government is entitled to the money as the default state. That is a pretty ****ed up attitude.

Although it's not really "going up", but a temporary deduction is expiring. Not the same thing.

Regardless how you slice it I noticed my paycheck reduced by more than $50 bucks every two weeks, so it is the same thing....

The fact Obama made a 3 minute speech about how he has saved us from higher taxes but failed to say "oh yea social security is going back up to 6.2%was completely irresponsible.

I'm not saying the goverment is entitled to anything. I'm saying we have a program that is currently paying out to citizens and that program needs to continue to be funded.

-Says every good Republican that ignores the fact that Bush got us here....Obama's just the one keeping us here unfortunately.

Last time I checked things were moving along fine until Pelosi & Company took over congress in 2007.

Were you singing his praises when it was lowered or do you just pick the moments to criticize?

While I agree he was an out of control spender - I hope you aren't insinuating (like most good libs do) that Bush was the cause of the recession.....

Did his spending help? No, of course not. But we should look to Clinton's mortgage policies that ultimately heralded in the housing collapse and started us on the path to recession.

And of course - this wouldn't be a conversation about spending without the sugar daddy himself - B. Rock Obama

It was a stimulus measure, enacted by Obama, due to expire on 12/31/12. Obama wanted it continued, Republicans refused to support it.

A good idea except corporations are given the rights of an individual. They should therefore pay taxes as such.

Which is why I'm in favor of a universal flat tax in the 10~15% region for everyone, no deductions. You make a profit off of something in this country (be it your labor, buying, selling etc) you pay the same tax rate as everyone.

IRS would be reduced to essentially be there to check returns and spot check businesses who report expenses. Nothing more.

I love that people are so quick to use even invalid information to point the finger at someone they don't support and say "See what he did, I hate him!"

LOL

FYI, I didn't vote for Obama either, I just can't stand the extreme partisanism I see in these conversations and they usually lean toward bashing the incumbent.

I really don't remember much of a difference, but I wasn't making as much back then. I am not criticizing the tax, its life and that is one thing that will always be a certain in life is paying taxes, however the fact it was not included in President Obama's address to the nation and I had to instead see it in form of a smaller paycheck kind of pissed me off. I actually do like President Obama but that was something he should have included. That is a large tax hike for most Americans, especially those living paycheck to paycheck.

Never assumed you were - only said that most libs blame Bush for the recession - generally because they lack either the willingness or the brains to look deeper.

Like you, I agree Bush had his flaws - but for all of them, his end goal wasn't a move towards socialism....

I'm just trying to make one things clear....it's not a tax hike. I'm not saying everything else you said isn't fair....just sayin'
