Apple TV or HDMI ipad?

What's best for me?

I have Ipad 3 so an HDMI video sender is pointless now it's moved to lightning and I'd probably get Ipad 5.

I don't want to keep buying new Apple tv's every year just looking for a way to watch my Itunes content..very little room left on Ipad.

So is it worth it? I occasionally rent the odd movie via Itunes for Ipad so maybe movie rental would be handy too.

Photos/music not really interested in too much.

Ipads are far more flexible and capable - for example, they can play back network streams, nonnative formats, UpnP, smb, ftp, http , webDAV sources etc. (You might want tocheck out my articles here at the iPad / iPhone SW fora on these apps - I'veposted tons of dedicated articles on mltimedia playback on iOS devices.)

Apple TV's don't come out every year and not much they can update anyways. It now does 1080P, and why would you have to buy a new one all the time anyways? You can get a refurbished one from Apple.com for $85 also, much cheaper than an iPad.
