IDX are VobSub subs. You'll need to include those VobSub files in an MKV container - that's the only way of playing them back in AVPlayerHD, unless you OCR the subs / get them, altready OCR'ed, from elsewhere.

External VobSubs aren't played back, not even if you make sure they're named the same as the file you play back. You can't put these files in an MP4 (m4v / mov) file either - AVPlayerHD will just crash on trying to play it back.

I've made available the VobSub-formatted subs of Iron Sky at https://dl.dropbox.com/u/81986513/012013/IronSkyMAIN-rip-finnishVobSubs.zip . If you try to play them back together with https://dl.dropbox.com/u/81986513/082012/sublerSubs/IronSkyMAIN-rip.mkv (after removing the embedded BD subs from the file to make sure VLC is reading subs from the external files), you'll see the desktop VLC can render the subs but AVPlayer can't.

(More info (warning, highly technical article) HERE.)

thanks (again). this is what i figured out also after checking google. I d/l vobsub and tried converting them to SRT but it is a pain in the arse so i just and looked for SRT subs on the net and found those :)

btw was getting more information from this site http://forum.videohelp.com which you are probably familiar (or even contributor) but thought i'd post it for others since it is a great resource as well

In case you have one of these Panasonic, Sony or Canon HD camcorders, which mainly utilize MTS files, you may face some unwanted incompatibility issues.

Yup, this is why I'm telling people to remux those files with, say, iVI, uness the videos are interlaced. In the latter case, only a full reencoding (into a progressive video stream) is possible, unless you can put up with stuttering software playback.

Directly playing back those files, particularly the higher-bitrate / framerate ones, is impossible without heavy stuttering on even the iPad 4. The CPU isn't fast enough and, as we all know, Apple has disabled utilizing h.264 hardware acceleration for non-native containers for AppStore apps. "Thanks", Apple...

BTW, if you want, I can copy my MTS remuxing guide here.

EDIT: neelyharold's original post I answered to was removed in the meantime. Nevertheless, as the info I posted above may still be useful for a lot of people, I leave my answer intact.
