True! When I came to upgrade to the 3G mine was sold "as new" despite a few small scuffs, I guess everyone was still used to shiny-backed iPods at the time

"substantially" is such an interesting term and throw around so easily to attempt to make a point. I can pay substantially less for a 10 year old escort than I can brand new mustang. It's so fun to equate everything only to its price.

I know that I prefer the plastic ones, myself.

Gorilla Glass and plastic outer case would be ideal. No more of that scuffy aluminum junk. The benefits of plastic and glass over metal case:
- Hand won't attenuate signal
- Won't dent
- Won't scuff
- Won't rub off coloring
- Better chance of survival if dropped
- Cheaper
- Keeps ballers from feeling too elite

Apple already does offer cheaper models than the flagship iPhone -- currently the iPhone 4 and the iPhone 4S.

What ever happened to the mantra that "Apple doesn't sell junk", hence the premium price to own an Apple product.

The cheapest plan you can get on AT&T is what? 80 about if on a single account? Many here, including myself, pay close to half that with more service

Not sure why you are arguing with me. Free on a contract without taking into account the resulting service price of the contract is meaningless. So yes, it can be cheaper than free with a new agreement

I, and many others are looking for a cheaper to make phone to begin with

Or what is your point exactly?

The difference is not EVERYBODY can buy a Porsche. Sure, you can purchase an 'old' porsche for not much, but try to run it - reasonably, you just cannot.

On the other hand, anybody with the means to have an iPhone, can get an iPhone. Why? Contracts.

Unfortunately, brats owning them in the school is not Apples fault nor even the phone providers but the parents...

Just look at this forum; it is crawling with disgruntled teenagers and total idiots whom of which with half a braincell would realise your thought pattern, instead they would rather rip into you..
Realize his thought pattern? Take a look at his previous post. It's quite clear. I'm glad you stated having a differing opinion makes people less intelligent. That is an extremely intelligent assertion.

Define premium these days? On or off subsidy - there are many phones that cost the same or more than the iPhone

Owning an iPhone does not make you elite. It shows people that you'll fork out money for a "simple to use device" without true multitasking or a battery that can get you through a day or NFC or third-party keyboards (which most people on Android LOVE) or Gmail Priority Inbox sync or a decent Gtalk app. [Ask me to go on and I will - if you care to hear the issues I had with iPhone when I used one for a month.]

I work at a five diamond hotel in a pretty large city. The top phone I see with guests? The white Galaxy S3! Second most popular? The iPhone 4/4S. Third? The Pebble Blue S3 tied with an iPhone 5.

iPhone 2S and S stands for Strings.

So, 2 phones with strings attached on each side, molded recycled aluminum cans back and no annual contract, visual Wi-Fi.

$ 3.99 a piece.

Simple iPhone nano

The third world needs a cheap phone that makes calls, SMSs and photos.
They don't need a smartphone as they cannot afford to be connected.

While this would be initally be very good for Apple, as they will obviously reach a higher portion of the market, having budget versions of their products could also dilute the brand.

iPod touch
Starting at $199, no contract.
Runs iOS and all the iPhone apps.

A much cheaper version of iPhone. The only minor is drawback is no cellular connection.

The lack of GPS is what bugs me the most.

You'd think it would be, given the pricing structure. But actually no, 64 gigabytes of storage (compared to the 16) doesn't add that much more to the component cost of the device, compared to what they're charging for it. I can't remember what the exact cost was (it was revealed in one of the teardowns) but when you think about it, a 64 gigabyte micro-SD can be bought for about $60.

I'm guessing Apple's custom SoC would be the most expensive part.

The iPad Mini is different. Apple didn’t create it to be a budget iPad - They created it to be a smaller version of the iPad, as some people prefer the smaller form factor, in much the same way that some people prefer 13” macbooks over 15” macbooks. However I don’t think there are any people that would prefer a smaller iPhone over the current one. If Apple makes a smaller iPhone, it will be a budget iPhone.

A phone having no cellular connection is not a minor drawback

Yes, I guess that would be a major drawback for phone use. An iPhone does a lot more than make phone calls, though. For someone wanting all the apps and media that an iPhone offers, an iPod touch works great.

As soon as this year? Well they've got most of the year to go.

BUT most people I know don't complain about the cost of the iPhone, they just don't want to pay for the data plan for the phone. Which is probably the same for most smart phones but they don't want to add it to the phone if they don't already have it.

Or else they'd even get them for their kids; IF they want their kid to have a phone the current iPhone is cheaper than the current iPod touch (not counting the data!).
