If you take this link and put your IMEI number at the very end, this LG site will spit back out the IMEI followed by a long string of characters that looks something like this: “LGE960 ACAGBK 212KPHG188745 20121206 GLOBAL/GLOBAL N N”

If you break this string apart, you get:
LGE960 = phone model
A = ?
CA = Country where the device was sold. (Others include ‘US’ for the U.S., ‘HK’ for Hong Kong, ‘AU’ for Australia and so on.)
G = Storage (G = 16GB, 8 = 8GB)
BK = Color
2 = ?
12 = Production Month (November)
K = Production Country (Korea)
PHG = ?
188745 = The line or production number, showing that phone was the 188,745th device made.
2012121206 = The production date in YYYYMMDD format

A number of Nexus 4 owners have been sharing and compiling the production numbers day by day (see below). It suggests that LG made about 70,000 devices in October, 90,000 in November and 210,000 in December. Google declined to comment on these numbers.

Still, they’re interesting for a couple reasons. It appears that Google and LG have been conservative with the Nexus 4 launch. LG has previously said that the Nexus 4 “had proven extremely popular, and as such retailers have been met with huge demand.” Google’s U.K. and Ireland managing director Dan Cobley likewise has said there have been communication problems on both ends with managing supply for the Nexus 4.

Keeping supplies tight have made the Nexus 4 debut a world apart from the launch of the original HTC-manufactured Nexus One back in 2010.

So, it looks like el goog + lg are powering full stream ahead, was nearly afraid that they they will stop at 375k.

Now it looks like we are at 423k devices or more than 10k devices per day, the same rate as in Dec.
I'd say - not bad at all.

I'd have to disagree with you there. I had a Galaxy Nexus before the Nexus 4 and Samsung clearly didn't put forth their best hardware, and this is judging by the camera alone. Battery life for the GalNex was subpar at best (only slightly better than the 3Gs it replaced) and I felt the plastic was even subpar.

LG on the other hand has essentially taken their top tier Optimus G and turned it into the nexus 4, albeit it without the fantastic 13 MP camera. I'm still not sure why the nexus 4 screen isn't calibrated, supposedly the Optimus G screens are calibrated though not to apple or HTC levels.

On an unrelated note coming from a 3Gs since August, I'm completely puzzled that Android 4.2 doesn't give you the ability to deny individual apps permission to use location based services. First day I had my nexus (both gal and 4), Maps via google now, killed my battery life.

My guess is that the Nexus phones are designed by Google completely, but only manufactured by LG.

Turn off location history in maps. Also, The nexus 10 proves that this time around Samsung produced an extremely high end product for the nexus family.

Their still making more than 50$ on these. They just aren't producing enough to meet the demand. The price isn't the problem. Its that they would rather make optimus g's and low budget phones than produce enough nexus's to meet the demand. They should have made 4 times as many as they have so far. The demand is clearly there for them. Asus has no problem pumping out over a million nexus 7's a month. LG clearly isn't taking the nexus program as seriously as they should have. Samsung has shown several times that it does take it seriously. The nexus 10 is just as high end as the nexus 4 if not even more high end considering its the first cortex a15 on the market. With dolphin beta instead of chrome (which shouldn't have replaced the stock browser yet) it gets 500ms sunspider tests which is almost half the time the second fastest device gets. It also has ridiculously fast flash storage. It has over 100MB/s read speeds which is over twice as fast as the second fastest mobile devices storage. They didn't cheap out on it. Not to say that the nexus 4 isn't high end either, it is the device with the second fastest storage about 50MB/s, but LG has proven that they aren't willing to meet the demand of a nexus phone. Samsung had no problem meeting the demand of the Galaxy nexus at launch.

Ladies and gentleman, we seem to be approaching the serial number "half of the million" Curious who will be getting it

Production rate seems to be accelerating to 20k devices per day. So, they are really doing something. The "esndate" date "jumping" of TMO devices looks somehow conspicious, but "esnoutgodate" of most of them seems to be a 10-th of January, so maybe those are just some production irregularities.
Most of other serials and dates seem to mostly follow that same sequential pattern.

To sum it up: it looks like T-Mobile is getting a serious pile of devices. Noticed that they are selling well?
There is another noticeable batch for germany play store.

ANEUBK "EUROPE OPEN" seems to be something new. Start of normal retail sales through LG channels?

It comes down to costs. Using something appropriate for directly setting hardware levels such as a radiometer would mean a lot of very slow expensive hardware. This may not be feasible in a device that retails for $300-350.

I still don't think cost would increase by much if LG were to calibrate the screen. The choice of an 8 MP camera instead of the 13 MP camera I believe was so they wouldn't have a bulge like the one X, a design decision I can appreciate even if the pictures still are worse than an iPhone 4

Well there's always some level of calibration. I was just saying that they may have needed to remove as many costs as possible to drive the price down that far. It seems like a very nice device for its price point.
