Ditch the home button and replace it with a haptic one.

Apple already has patents for a virtual haptic home button.

Yeah but think of hard reset, what would you do of the phone locks up and freezes and you need to DFU or restart it?

Why can't Apple just make an all apps button so you can hide apps you don't use as much? It would make to home screen look so much better.

If Samsung would pull off this design NEXT, will you not be tempted?

I still say that a monolith design would be cool. Paul Miller over at The Verge (and Engadget before that) has talked about this for years. Imagine a phone that literally looks like a thin piece of black slate. It wouldn't have any hard edges anywhere and the screen would not be apparent until you turned it on, sort of magically appearing (kind of the way the LED display of the Nike FuelBand works).

I think there would be a lot to like about such a design. It would have a very natural feel to it, almost as if it was from nature with its rounded edges as if it had been sitting at the bottom of a raging stream for 100 years like a river rock. It would be very easy to hold with a great ergonomic design, and would look nothing like any phone we've ever seen.

There's nothing more minimal than something that looks like a piece of rock with no stand-out features anywhere on it until you light it up. :)

They could make the home button haptic and just change the reset duties to a volume button, they could also get rid of the mute switch they could make the sleep button a slider that can be pushed in both positions yet slides to mute the phone, and in place of the mute switch I would place the smallest led known to man that could also be defeated for those that don't like that notification light. Also on the software side they could make the home screen wide open for all notifications that matter to the user, integrate static quick settings into the search window and allow smart apps that could be more informative ala windows mobile
