I know this has been discussed somewhere, if here in MRs, please point me at it. Otherwise, what's the opinion from those who have played both? I played the Torchlight2 demo recently and it was ok, but nothing I'd call spectacular. Click a spot on the ground to run to it. Run up to mobs to automatically whack them or right-click to send projectiles at them, over and over. The underground passages all seemed very similar. In contrast, is D3 spectacular despite having to be online to play it?

One of the problems I have is the locked isometric camera which I've disliked in dungeon crawlers from the first. I prefer the close-in 3rd person view being able to change the camera angle to look out in front of me. I suspect this is the same issue for both D3 and T2.
Thanks!

I suspect you've been playing the PC demo. Us Mac users will be lucky to see the game available in 2013...

I have TL1 and I quite like it. Not very heavy on sys reqs either.

I just wanna toss in Dungeon Siege 3 here too. It's pretty much same, but you can change camera a bit, either topdown like Torchlight/Diablo or more close up as in 3rd person. It still doesn't have full close up camera, but you can turn it 360°.

The game have received mixed reviews, but I guess that is mostly because game changed quite a bit since the earlier versions and became more action oriented. I've played it quite a bit and find it enjoyable for a hack'n slash game :)

It also have hot seat co-op (two players on same machine, but that requires xbox controller or equivalent.) I use a dual ps3 clone and it works just fine with x360 controller emulator (an 1mb free app) and both controllers work fine.

There is a demo up at steam:

Well, Diablo 3 has higher sys reqs but with everything at low settings (native res of 1920x1200, I must admit that it plays smoothly and still looks just as good, if not better, than Torchlight...
I'm waiting until the Mac release of TL2 to make a decent comparison.

Torchlight 2 is a good game but it isn't to the polish of Diablo 3. People just gravitate towards it because its the cool thing to do.

Both game are good. Had diablo 3 been a new series without the word diablo in it people would love it.

Yeesh... and I just ordered the Diablo III DVD (it was on sale from Amazon, the Debil made me buy it LOL).... and now you are trying to make me regret my decision?! :D

I've read about Torchlight 2, and apparently it is the closest competitor to D3. Although I always liked how polished and gorgeous the Blizzard games are, I do have some reservations about their recent games like D3 and SC2. For one thing, forcing players to continuously be connected to the Internet while playing a single-player campaign game? Not cool, Blizzard, not cool.

Once I get sick of D3, I might peek and see if the Mac version of Torchlight 2 is worthwhile. I might also try out the MacOSX version of Rock. I hear it's much better than D3 in some ways.

Diablo 3 is not a game. It's a casino simulator backed by the Real Money Auction House, and therefore Serious Business (TM). People still playing that game aren't playing it because it's fun- they're playing it because they're addicted to the idea that they might be able to find a piece of gear worth $$$$ and sell it on the auction house.

Everything about Diablo 3 is just wrong. The game itself is horrible, the mechanics are beyond stupid (if someone swings an axe at you and you move out of the way, it's still considered a hit). Blizzard has repeatedly gone on record to tell the players how they should be playing the game (due to the amount of complaints that were raised), and that it's our fault for not having enough fun since "we're playing it wrong". This is not how game developers are supposed to act. Everything about Diablo 3 is designed to keep you in game for as long as possible and make Blizzard as much money as possible with little regard to the actual player experience.

Every single person I know who owns Diablo 3 has quit playing it because of the ******** mechanics where the game simply decides to kill you so you have to go and buy better gear off the Auction House (with in-game gold or real world dollars). I fired it up a few weeks ago to play for a few hours (having previously shelved it) and simply landed up getting frustrated with it again. Does this mean I'm a crappy player? Sure, maybe. That doesn't change the fact that you basically have to dedicate your waking life to Diablo 3 in order to get anywhere reasonable with it, and even then all you're going to land up doing is farming.

Torchlight 2 is the exact opposite of Diablo 3.

It's fun and enjoyable. I really have nothing else to say about it other then that. Runic did a very good job making it an enjoyable experience, and it's worth the time to play (unlike Diablo 3, which I regret ever purchasing and wasting my time in). None of my friends bother with Diablo 3 anymore, but I still see them in Torchlight 2 on occasion. We'll get into a game together and go have fun, and that's all there is to it. Just fun.

So, really, it boils down to this:

Do you want to "have fun" or take up a second job farming gear?

If you want to have fun, Torchlight 2 is just that. If you want to endlessly farm for gear and the incomprehensibly tiny chance that you might find something worth a few dollars on the Real Money Auction House, then Diablo 3 is the perfect game for you. Just don't expect to have any fun doing it though.

They are both great games in my opinion. I believe Torchlight 2 was developed by Blizzard North, the people responsible for Diablo 1 & 2..

Diablo 3 has It's fair share of issues, but at the end of the day It is still lots of fun, and there is certainly replay value.. The game is probably not as good as Diablo 2 was though, but again In my opinion worth buying when It's on sale.

If I were you I'd try the Starter Pack as It's free now, It's basically a demo and you'll get a taste of D3 without having to buy it..

I second this, D3 is not as good as Diablo 2, and I'd only pick it up if it was heavily discounted.

I got this game for $10 last year on steam, and gave it a 2nd shot when my first impressions of the demo ruined it for me.

In the inital release, I think the camera was limited, and the control schemes were absolutely horrid.

Once they patched that up, it was actually a fun game to play.

Diablo 3? Oh wait thats that game I paid $60 that I can't play because Blizzard got hacked due to their ****** security and their help site sends you into an infinite loop of "you need to use your username and password to reset your hacked username / password" and their phone number link is broken.

I've never played Torchlight 2 but at least with Torchlight you'll be able to play the game you paid money for.
