The best MIDI Patch manager ever. A lot of people is demanding to return SoundDiver to Logic again....pleeease

Please us the
B] tag so you're not destroying the layout with a huge pic. I never got into SoundDiver but hopefully there will be something that brings the essentials of SD integrated into LP

Probably little chance of SD features integrated into Logic either. I'd be very surprised if there was much if any additional support for external midi gear.

Or you could just shoot them an email & find out.

Good idea. So....what's the email for the for the guy who is head of the Logic development team??? Anyone know?

----------

Logic X will probably be a slightly enhanced version of Garageband targeted toward prosumers and sold on the App Store for $39.99.

My company does contract work for Apple to support Apple's sales & team and I can tell you that Apple is consider a price range of $9.99 - $19.99 for Logic Pro X! They are looking to target the prosumer market and after version X, if they decide to continue Logic development, Logic Pro will in the interim be watered down greatly to become a glorified Garageband 11 or 12. Logic X will be the last horrah!

Yeah, I'd like the email for the guys who work on OSX's GUI so I can make some suggestions about Finder and what not. Think I can talk directly to them? Probably not. And that is ultimately the problem with Apple. They have some feedback forms, but gathering from all the feedback they've been given over the years about things, I'm under the impression they dump them all immediately in the trash!

At least I found an awesome (and free/donation-ware) Finder replacement/enhancement called "XtraFinder". It's freaking awesome for the most part (color icons slows things to a crawl, but leaving that off it works very well and the standard Finder gets tabs and dual-pane options among other things, but those two make using OSX's Finder SOOOO much more pleasant. The developers at Apple could learn a thing or to from some of the 3rd party enhancements out there. I sometimes worry about stability using such things, but so far it seems rock solid in Mountain Lion.

What would be the point of turning Logic into GB when they already have GB? Or do you mean that they'll kill off GB and make a lite version of Logic for consumers instead?

That just wouldn't make any sense to me, GB seems very successful and while Logic can appeal to both pros and high end people doing it for fun, there's no reason to make it too much like GB.

We said the same thing with Final Cut Pro X and iMovie. While some of the features and UI come back to FCPX, it can never replace FCP7 or match up to the competition.

Let's hope that Logic doesn't meet the same end.

But with FCX, while there was more of a focus on users who weren't as high end, it seemed like the main reason features were lost was because they had to rewrite the whole thing and just didn't have time to get in all the high end features again before they released it. And many of the missing features that led people to believe they were abandoning the high end have since returned. Even if FCX still doesn't match up to everything FC7 could do, it's a stretch to call it a glorified iMovie.

And logic isn't the same situation since it doesn't need a total rewrite. For the most part, they shouldn't need to remove features, they should only be removing them if they really feel like nobody is using them and they are adding bloat to the program. Personally I'd love to see Logic get a more intuitive interface, and I don't think that's the same as dumbing it down, nor does it require making the app any less powerful.

If I buy Logic Pro today would I have to pay for the next version?

Yes. Even if you got a boxed version of Logic 9 you still have to buy it again if you want a downloadable version.

Apple didn't get rich out of nothing. :apple: (or at least not everything)

True that they're not doing upgrades any more, but at this point the price of buying the app is the same as what an upgrade used to cost.

Cubase 7 just came out and the upgrade from 6.5 is $149 (grace period is only a few weeks), from 6.0 it's $199 (earlier versions are $249 and $399). DP upgrade is $195 (although props to them for including any earlier version of the software). Last protools upgrade was $299 after less than a year since the last paid upgrade, for people with the PT hardware it was $999 (again, less than a year) for previous version, coming from version 8 or 7 it was $1499 or $2499.

While upgrades would be nice, the current pricing compares well to the other DAWs, even paying full price each time instead of an upgrade discount.

I have a gut feeling a revamped Logic Pro X will be coming out like Apple did with Final Cut Pro X so I'm just going to wait for that

ProTools who?

check this comment from the protools people: my italics...

Update: Russ Hughes of ProTools expert contacted us to make clear that his original report said nothing about Apple's development work on Logic and addressed only the specialist team that assists professional users with using the software tools.
The EMEA [Europe, Middle East, and Africa] team responsible for nurturing and supporting the pro studios, post facilities and TV has gone from 12-2 in a matter of months, so we don't think the use of the term 'decimated' (even though a quote from our source) was off the scale. However as Apple has confirmed in their note to you, the pro coders are still [there], both in the USA and Germany - the team is around 60 strong.

Our question remains (which is not answered by the Apple statement) - are they willing to either deny or confirm that the team has been reduced from 12-2 in EMEA and if (as we know is the case) it is the truth, what does that say about Apple's commitment to pro users?

is it not fairly obvious from the fact that this is from protools expert that this is a not-too-subtle piece of industrial sabotage?
oh, protools thinks apple is not committed to logic? well, better get on to protools quick then eh logic fans? how pathetic!

He's full of crap, he got called on it, and he tried to weasel his way out of his story.

Now that Logic and the other pro apps are on the app store, Apple cut some sales people specific to those apps. They aren't even support people. He says that the development team is still at 60 people, but cutting sales people means they're not committed? Come on.

You're absolutely right, it's a PT guy trying to make the competition look bad. If anyone is in bad shape these days, it's Avid/Digi - the head of Avid resigned, just before their quarterly announcement. That can't be a good sign.

Nah Logic is dead.

Just because Avid sucks at the moment does not mean Apple's department is so much better. Face it... people using Logic are left in the dark more then any other application in the world.

I didn't say Apple is so much better (although as a company at least they're not in danger of going out of business), and Logic users are left in the dark. I was just responding to this specific rumor (from a PT guy). Which is a bunch of nonsense.

And Logic is very much alive, it's just a lower priority for Apple. There's no way they'd be doing so many maintenance releases if it was dead. Logic 10 is way way overdue but we will see it eventually. It's just a question of when and how much of an improvement it is.

I totally wish Apple put more resources into Logic and had bigger updates more often. And the lack of info from the company is terrible. But in the meantime, it works better for me than any other audio app I've tried. In the end, I use what the tools that work best for making a living, and at this point it happens to be Logic.

Most of the Logic Users I know are pretty happy with the program and only need a few improvements here and there. Logic (formerly Notator) has been around for a long time and there just isn't a whole bunch of stuff that can be added that's going to blow people away. I really didn't seem much groundbreaking advancement in the arena of DAW from WNAMM reports.

Logic is fine. If i'm a betting man I'm thinking that the delay has more to do with Logic moving over to iOS along with Aperture and FCPX.

Apple's acquisition of Redmatica shows they're still committed to delivering improved tools.

Agreed, but I'd kill for those few improvements here and there, they are a long time coming. And the right set of moderate tweaks and fixes would make a huge difference, I'd be more excited about that than glitzy new features.

Here's a big one. Logic uses only one CPU core on armed tracks. Fixing that would be a giant improvement, and we've been waiting years for it. Even if Logic 10 is mostly things like that, I'd want to upgrade in a heartbeat.

With the release of Ableton live 9 and its advanced editing features such as harmony and melody to midi Logic is now lagging way behind in its pitch related feature set. The youth of today don't even see Logic as a DAW option. If the next iteration from Apple doesn't integrate some of these features or handle audio in a pitch flexible non destructive way then it is the end for this great DAW. Technology is moving forward.

While I agree that Logic needs to improve pitch (and time) features, Ableton is a radically different kind of app and for the most part it is aimed at a very different kind of user.

I'd love to see Logic improve the audio editor and add in integration with FCPX. I came to Logic from STP (after it became clear that STP was EOL) and I find working with audio for video Logic is only almost great. The idea of being limited to destructive edits for certain functions in 2013 is crazy to me.

Also I agree that better usage of multicore performance on playback would be worth the upgrade price.

Agreed. PT supports multiple movies in a single session. And Logic's surround mixing is terrible, they need to totally replace that.
