Apple Store dropped MacBook, offering new one, advice needed.

That's very good that you avoided the Air model. You should be happy with your MBP.

The screen in this is nice enough and while it would be nicer to have a thinner body, this is still about the same weight as our old one and I can upgrade to an ssd later or upgrade ram which will be nice.

I'm not surprised that Apple had the $2649 model in stock but none of the other CTO models. A lot of smaller stores just have the base configurations advertised on the website, while other stores will have those models plus the "ultimate" with every single option checked such as the one you wound up with. Here in NYC we get spoiled a bit since the stores have a lot of the common CTO configurations in store.

That should last you quite a while. In addition to AppleCare you might look into insurance options for your new windfall. A personal articles policy would cover accidental damage as well.

Yes, that will plug into the Thunderbolt port and give you HDMI output on the other side.

Maybe I'll check with my home owners and see if they cover it as an add on like I do with my wife's wedding ring.

That's what I did. I pay $60/year to cover my Mac (with a $250 deductible). It came in handy after I lost my MacBook Air at an airport last month.

I'll be using this mostly for normal generic stuff, web browsing, watching movies, etc. I'll also be doing some photo and video editing.

Trying to decide on the following things: Should I upgrade to a retina display, should I upgrade to SSD vs standard hard drive. Should I go to a 15" instead, or see if they would let me get a maxed out air up to 1499 for free. My wife will be using this primarily. She likes to do the photo/video editing and will be using it for school.

Have to make a decision today. Any thoughts/input would be greatly appreciated, thanks!

You know, I honestly have not noticed any color difference going from a 17" glossy to a 17" antiglare. I would now never buy (if given the choice) glossy over matte. The difference in the coloring is very minimal, and to me not noticeable. It is a lot easier on the eyes and it's awesome not seeing reflections in the glass.

That being said, I gave in and ordered an rMBP because my laptop is a 17" and is just not portable enough for me. But the screen is great. I had the 2012 15" antiglare a couple months ago, trust me, you will enjoy it. Especially for the price you're getting it at!

Add the 50 bucks I paid for the repair on the busted machine and I basically got the computer for 350 bucks.

They are migrating my data right now and I'll have it tomorrow. I'm floored they did this. Seemed to good to be true but it did! I'm ecstatic. Fantastic customer service. Turns out the tech who dropped it has been at that store for 11 years and used to be the store manager which I really think helped the entire situation. I'll buy apple care before the year is up.

I have the exact same machine as you! I switched to a 256GB SSD. I love it!

Even better. They gave him a $1500 credit toward a $2650 laptop that they sold to him for $1800 because they didn't have the model he wanted in stock. Apparently his employer has a discount program with Apple (in the 5-10% range) and they applied that, as well. They did charge for the original $50 repair, so the final cost, including tax, was about $360.
