i remember when i got my first drivers license, i had to mark a check box that automagically signed me up for the selective service.

I remember thinking back, that i was just going to claim i was a homosexual if i was ever drafted....guess that won't work anymore.

I doubt you could get across the boarder if the situation arose in this day and age.

If there was a conflict and my country needed me, I would sign up prior to any implementation of the draft and do my duty in whatever capacity they seem fit.

I registered when I turned 18. I think having a driver's license put me on the list.

What I didn't know, and learned about 3 minutes ago from reading the Wikipage, is you're required to notify them within 10 days of a change of address. I've moved twice since registering (in with my wife's (then girlfriend's) parents, and now my apartment) and didn't notify them. Now that I posted that on the interwebs I better notify them. THEY'LL FIND ME!

Considering how the public opinion is right now, I think an administration that enacts a draft would be incredibly unpopular. For myself, I only have the remainder of Obama's term and I'm pretty sure he's not interested in any more wars right now. (Sorry, don't want to turn this into a politics thread.)

I think a draft is very unlikely to happen any time soon, and potentially ever, in the future of the United States. If there were going to be one in our current wars it probably would have been in 2001-2003. Even if we approached a draft, as others have said, they would activate reservists and call for volunteers to join.

Not as simple as it sounds. Have you got a 2nd language? Job skills? Post secondary education? Plus, you need 5 years of residency needed to get Canadian citizenship. So, for 5 years you are still just an American, and crossing back into the US on a US passport. Plus, you may not even be able to fly over the US since Homeland Security gets a list of all passengers that fly over the US. Basically, you can be denied boarding a Canadian plane by US authorities if it is flying into US airspace, even it is destined for a non-US airport.

See Above. Plus, you may be liable to extradition back to the US, if requested. We have this treaty that compels each country to return criminals to their own country. Draft dodging is a crime in the US, the US authorities can ask for the return of people charged with that crime. Though of course, depending on whether we approve of the war, we may not try to hard to find you.

Canadian Border Services Agency? We are a sovereign (sort of) and independent (kinda) nation (well, actually 1, 2, 3, or 600+ nations, depending on how you count) you know.

We already turn down more immigration applications than we accept. Being an American running from the US justice system doesn't exactly put you at the top of the list. Not unless you've got money. IIRC, half a million $$ invested into the Canadian economy does in fact put you at the top of the list.

Weapons of mass destruction = nuclear. Not many people touch that.

I'm not as sure as you are, about the unlikelihood of a renewed draft. I agree that reservists, and then retired military personal, will be the first because they are already trained. Then volunteers because that is politically more palatable.

The draft is for long wars. Anything major is going to be over too fast anyone drafted to ever get to see any real fighting. But that cycle of proxy bush wars in middle east was getting very close to needing a draft. I think one of the major factors in them getting closed down was the politicians not wanting to take the hit for a draft. But... had there been just one more conflict opening up before the middle east commitment started winding down, I think the politicians would have swallowed the pill and started up the draft again.

But... that's just my personal opinion....

I know one of my American friends started hinting that it might be nice if their teenage son came to visit us .... for long time.

With that said I think this country needs to be like some other countries and have mandatory service. But in any case war should never happen unless the president asks congress to declare it.

The selective service has been around for quit some time.

I registered in 1971. My number got called in 1972 so I joined the Navy rather than get inducted into the army.

What are the actual chances of your "number" getting called? Don't they do it alphabetically by last name?

Spineless *******s aside, it would be interesting to see how the Selective Service would treat the obesity epidemic. Would one be required to undergo x amount of weeks of weight loss/ fat camp then start boot camp/ training or would they merely be classified medically unfit and exempt?

They drew "lottery" numbers and I think if your last 4 of your SSN or something like that matched up you had to go.

We are drawing forces out of combat. Not to mention, when people signed up for the military they may enlisted for 2,3,4 or 6 years, but they have an 8 year obligation.

So there are a lot of people who are already trained, and NOT in the service right now they will be called to war far before people will be drafted.

Also, I imagine that they would even make offers to some people if they really need people who are beyond their 8 year obligation.

You are worried over a 0.00000001% chance of going to war.
