Im sorry for the incredibly dumb question, but do iMacs come equipped for USB 3.0 devices? My model is the late 2011 model (before this new thin model).
before i buy an external hard drive i am unsure if it can take USB 3.0
No, your model comes with USB 2.0 ports.Im sorry for the incredibly dumb question, but do iMacs come equipped for USB 3.0 devices? My model is the late 2011 model (before this new thin model).

That's not true for the OP's iMac. Only 2012 Mac models support USB 3.0.Even though your iMac only has USB2.0 the actual answer to your question is yes iMacs come equipped for USB 3.0 devices.

do iMacs come equipped for USB 3.0 devices?
The OP was asking about their 2011 iMac. The answer to the question is, "No, all earlier iMacs, including your 2011 iMac, do not come equipped for USB 3.0 devices. Only 2012 iMacs come equipped for USB 3.0 devices." Or, if you prefer, "Yes, some iMacs come equipped for USB 3.0 devices, but not yours."What I said is true. I never said that the OP's iMac supported USB3. I said that his iMac only has USB2.0 and that yes iMacs do come equipped for USB 3.0 devices. Both things I said are accurate and true.
His question is below.

False. All 2012 iMacs come with USB 3.0. All earlier models, some of which ship currently as refurb models, do not.All iMacs comes shipped with USB3

The OP did not ask about 2012 iMacs or currently shipped new iMacs. The OP clearly stated they were asking about their 2011 iMac, which does not support USB 3.0. It is misleading to state otherwise. Read all of the original post, in context:
Nevertheless, OPs imac 2011 is equipped for USB3. Like every computer from the last 10 years.
It just wont get the benefit of the speed of a USB3-interface.
But when it comes to buy an external HD today, than of course one would buy a device with USB3. It's compatible with older USB2-hardware.
