I think you are overly complicating this. Look in post #16 of this thread. Posted a link explaining how to reset your password in Lion or Mountain Lion.

Everything is erased. The operating system is reinstalled from scratch and the computer is as if it was brand new.

That will help him with the password, but he should really just do a clean install since it's a computer he purchased used.

Probably not, but it could theoretically have tracking/keylogging software installed. A clean install is the right thing to do.
