Characters

I have a Mac OS X 10.7.5 lion... My question is how do i insert a character
from my mac to a email or FB... I have the character viewer on my tool bar
but i don't know how to insert or add it to a email or FB. I don't know if this
is the right forum.. but any help would be appreciated.. Thank You
