Need help with a possible trade...

Just got a brand new iPad 4...and really like it, but a coworker has offered to trade me her like-new late 2009 15" MBP for my pad + $200 on my end. Sounds like a pretty good trade to me...but I have no idea what her MB is worth. It's totally stock too, and will need an OS update as well.

What is the 15" MBP worth right now, really? Is a 2009 going to be prehistoric soon?

I'm an Apple noob too...and I appreciate the help. Thanks in advance.

I would say dont trade - may not be a huge difference. But I would never buy a 2009 MBP in 2013.

I'm thinking so too, not only for that but because of a portability issue as well. The iPad is easy to carry, the 15" MBP...not so much.

Also although really like my iPad...because I'm well versed in OS6, bot I have no experience with the Apple OS at all and I don't want to trade then not be happy with the Mac and have a hard time selling it because of the age.

I'd never go for that considering the age of the hardware. Think about for a second...you're going to give this person a brand new piece of hardware and $200 for their 4 year old laptop.

But if it's what you want, don't let a bunch of voices on the internet throw you off course.

For what it's worth, I absolutely loved my mid 2009 13" MBP, but 2 weeks ago I decided it was time to retire it. I ended up giving it to my parents, mainly for my mom to use.

Anyway, what I'm saying is that the iPad may be worth less overall, but I think it will be more useful in the next year or so. Also, the MBP doesn't have any warranty left, so if something fails, you're SOL.

If she offers to pay $200 [ instead of asking ], then the trade isn't a bad deal!

What are the specs on her MBP ? How is the battery holding up ? [ imp, because you might end up coughing up some dough for a replacement ] ...

Honestly, iPad and MBP aren't comparable... One's a full blown computer, the other [ iPad ] well... gets the job done for the most part, but not even close to replacing a computer!

ebay completed auctions show 660 to 875 depending for her computer. I have no real idea what iPads cost so there you go. I would take the trade, but then I would never have bought the iPad.

If the MBP is one with the higher-res anti-glare screen, I'd probably accept the trade.

Then, I'd take the $200, sell the MBP, pool the money, and get one of the new 128GB iPads.

Those numbers are high, you can get a 2011 for the high end of that range, and there's a BIG difference between the 2009 C2D models and the 2011 Core i7 models. Try CL instead.

I wouldn't pay more than $500 for a 2009 uMBP-15, unless it had at least 8GB of RAM and an SSD.

Those are sold computers on ebay in the last 7 or so day's. What you'd pay for something and what it's worth are different.
