So does that mean talking with someone who is in the car is just as dangerous (since it is like talking hands free)?

I don't buy the research, I've heard similar findings before. Perhaps I am just someone who can easily focus on more than one task? Talking on the phone doesnt slow my reaction time, blur my vision or make my judgement skills worse...

Hands free is SAFER than driving while holding a phone, but mentally moving resources from being an alert driver to being on a phone call while using hands free isn't as safe as no phone usage at all

I don't recall the exact paper (but I could track it down for you if you'd like) that investigated the issue of talking on the phone vs talking to passengers. It was found that talking to a passenger wasn't as distracting as talking to someone over the phone because:

1. Drivers were better able to synchronise the processing demands of carrying on a conversation with those of driving when the person was with them in the car
2. Passengers adjusted the conversation based on your driving needs (like slowing down if you're approaching a red light, or alerting you if you missed something).

There was another study by Stayer et al in 2006 that demonstrated that people talking on the phone while driving can have the same, and sometimes worse, driving performance as those who had a blood alcohol level of .08%.

It it possible that you aren't as affected as others? Yup! There's a lot of variation between people, and practice can improve skills. But, to be honest, there's possibly an element of overestimating your own skills. You may not be the worst driver, but you may not be as good as you think if put to the test.

Is it silly that you're allowed to talk on the phone if you're not touching it, but it's illegal the moment you do? Yes. But banning drivers from using a phone completely is probably not the easiest thing to pass politically, so they did the best that they could. If we went by the science, talking on the phone should be banned completely.

Everyone's saying something different. Some people are saying iPhone Dev Team used to release at 12AM-2AM, and now you're saying midday.

Dev Team releases don't follow like Apple releases (12AM PST). They are almost always during the midday of MuscleNerd's timezone (that'd be PST) and sometimes vary 1-2 hours. Never have they done a release in which the US was in late night/early morning hours.
