It would be SO confusing! Apple really needs to stock to one-product-is-perfect-for-everybody.
That is what made Apple great. Think about it - they had one iPhone and they killed every other phone on the market. They had one iPad and killed every other tablet on the market.
Now they want to make anything and everything, throw it against the wall and see what sticks. And the typical iCustomer will be so damn confused that they will not buy anything. Apple needs to remember who its new target customer is. Apple needs to make it easy to by an Apple product, no thought required. Apple fans get confused so easily that having VERY limited choices means mo' money, Mo' Money, MO' MONEY!

But seriously - Apple did extensive research and determined that the 3.5 inch screen was the perfect size screen for a telephone. Anything bigger, and one-handed operation is impossible for most people.

If Henry Ford made what "enough people ... want something like this" he would have made a faster horse. But instead, he invented the automobile. If Steve Jobs asked people what they thought they wanted, then Steve would have invented the mainframe computer. But instead, Steve invented the Personal Computer.
Apple does not make what the uneducated masses "think" that they "want", because Apple know that people do not know what they want until Apple shows it to them. I mean really! How can people determine their desires until the choices become available in the marketplace?
Fer chrissakes, you can't buy happiness. But people "think" that they "want" it. And they find it each and every time Apple comes out with a new product.
Be patient people. If Apple comes out with a big-ass phone that is too big for your hand and too big for your pocket, then you'll know that you want it. Until then, you can't possibly know.

Basically yep. I had the 3GS for two years from launch and loved it apart from the camera. Easily useable with one hand. After a bigger Lumia 800 and then even bigger HTC One X, I got iPhone 5 this Christmas and even though it's only .5" bigger, I do find myself using two hands most of the time to use it. If I try to use one I have to readjust in my hand to reach the top of the screen and risk dropping it. If they'd made it the same size as the 3GS/4/4S with the new design, it would be perfect.
That said, I have no problem with Apple making a larger model for those who want it. I have an iPad mini for that sort of thing though. If you have to use two hands, you might as well have a decent sized screen for games/video/browsing. The way I see it, these 4.5-6" 'phablets' are jack of all trades, masters of none and exist for convenience rather than utility of design. Portable phones should become infinitely more portable as technology progresses until we can implant them in the brain or whatever, not bigger.
So they need to be more innovative to give more choices.
The hw link i suggested between 2 or more IOS devices would be an option.
To be able to use an iPad or bigger ipoud touch as a second screen with notications(incoming/missed calls,meetings), whattsapp capabilities,shared content, etc would be a great addition to the standard iPhone.
Perhaps it would not be as profitable and will upset the bussiness model Apple is currently using.
But imagine, everyone with a Iphone 4s, iphone 5 or iphone mini will be able to do a screen upgrade by adding an ipoud touch+ to their iPhone will instantly generate revenue.
The problem would be that a new generation iPhone won' t generate as much revenue, because people would not have to do an upgrade on the iphone. But there is a chance they will be updating the second screen, this would also create revenue.
Apple should offer more integration and flexibility to their line-up, without having a lot of products.This would be the solution. Because Apple controls both software and hardware, they will be able to pull this off.
And they should go this route.
Next stop after this, should be integration between MacOS devices and IOS devices.

You can't just state that the screen is tiny without any basis though. And surely the future will be no screen at all?
The iPhone only has a tiny screen if you use it in a stationary environment where a tablet or laptop would be better suited. In terms of portable usage, the difference between 3.5-4" and 5" is basically non existent since you generally hold the phone quite close anyway.

Do you really think so? I'm not all that sure, and I do not know many satisfied users of the very large devices.
I know more people who've gone from a large Android device back to the smaller iPhone.
It seems to be a case of logical usefulness. I'd bet more people go to the Q10 and Z10 than move to a super-sized device. Logical usefulness, logical connectivity.
We don't really need to carry the world around in our pockets when the world we need to be dealing with is right in front of our faces.
But that's just one dumb old man talking, of course. 🙂

My phone is 4.8" and it fits fine in every day jeans. What you said is highly ignorant and may god help your poor soul.

That argument is invalid though, because Samsung don't offer a device with the same specifications as the S3 and Note 2 in a smaller size. You have no reference point to compare the sales figures. People buying the S3 and other large Android cannot be construed to mean that there is demand for large phones, because smaller iPhones are still selling by the millions too. It simply means that well specced Android phones are selling well, it just so happens that the best specced Android phones all have large screens. If Samsung made a 4" phone with the specs of the S3, I'm guessing it would sell equally as well.
I wear regular jeans and sitting down the HTC One X in my pocket wasn't as comfortable and I was always aware of it's presence. With the iPhone 5, I can't tell it's there unless it vibrates or rings.
I think people are missing the bigger picture here. People dont want a bigger phone, they want a bigger do it all machine but one that can be carried around with ease. Thats one of the reason the mini is so popular. Lets say you come out with a killer 5 inch phone, your also cannibalizing sales of other apple products.
The day when a device can be a tablet and a phone by changing its size.

Apple really needs to enhance it's synergy between it's products. Like the Apple TV is all the better device when you have other devices, then I'd love to see some between the iPhone and iPad.
For instance, a call can appear on your iPad screen, and you can answer it and have it pick up on your iPhone, or you could leverage the speakerphone on the iPad.
Thus doing this, you don't need a larger phone. You move the consumers to get a small device, and save money, and also push people to buy another device, and make money.
If Apple were to launch an iWatch, it would just be a huge notification center, oh it could also tell time as well.😛 You would need another device to enhance the watch.
Hell, even Apple could have the pull to eventually pull the audio port out of their devices and make it where you use bluetooth to send the audio to either a pair of headphones, or stream it over to your iWatch.

Yes. I agree. That is the only way to get innovation going in this market. Apple controls software and hardware an App Store. Samsung wouldn't be able to copy this that fast. They do not control the OS and compatability through all the different brand of android devices and would be a nightmare to get it to function properly.
Apple should step up in integration and flexibility , not in display innovation. Samsung is a display manufacturer, apple will not be able to keep up with Samsung on that area. This is the only way to think and be different in a competitive market.
They could even go further by making the ipad a wireless screen and input device for OSX PCs and macbooks .This can be done. Imagine a Mac mini that streams/mirrors the video to an ipad , and you can use the iPads touchscreen to control the content displayed by clicking on the icons, etc. you have an ipad with of power and possibilities of a regular pc as long as you are in your house or office, in reach of the network. You could stuff the macmini in a closed cabinet, out of sight.

What I'm seeing is people liking 7in.tablets now and 5in.phones, it seems to me there's a lot of confused people out there? I think there's enough choices out there and for me the iPhone 5 is awesome and I don't feel like I'm toting a 42in.flat screen TV. When is enough, enough? If my iPhone seems to small I have my iPad! I think Apple will ultimately have to make a 4.5-5.0in. iPhone like they did iPad mini, people want more choices so they can stay confused and have something to complain about! For me when there is less choices and the product is refined and works consistently smooth, simple and clean that's what I want If they make an iPhone with 4.5-5.0in and they keep it simple and clean I'm sure I'll get it, but for me they already have enough choices.😕😎

Why would anybody want such a tiny screen? That sounds like a niche product to me - something that could get maybe 10% of the market, tops.

It's not really "too narrow" as it is 16:9 like most phones out there.
Apple spent 5 years with a 3:2 aspect ratio for the iPhone and iPod Touch... and they just switched to 16:9 for both. They're not gonna change it again anytime soon... 16:9 is here to stay.
And if you get fed up with Apple for making a "narrow" phone and decide to switch to an Android phone... chances are you'll be getting 16:9 there too.
There are some phones today that are 15:9... but the vast majority have settled on 16:9
They increased the screen to 4'' because it was the easy thing to do.
But I agree, should have increased it from 3.5'' to 4.2'' or something.
Of course developers will hop on board. If you are a decent dev, you develop them with different resolutions in mind. Some if not most assets can be re-used or easily re-done, configure a few extra params for the new screen resolution and that's it. If it's more difficult, you're doing it wrong.

IMO a larger screen makes sense if Apple want to survive.
Else they can remain self-compatible with outdated product and slowly (rapidly?) return to the nothingness they knew in the 90's, and meet Nokia, RIM, Motorola and so many others.
It's not the devs who buy the products !
How long can they hope to sell more expensive and less consumer-satisfactory products by only providing fancier packaging, be it glass, aluminium or whatever ?
It can't last long on a market where competitors update their product at least twice a year, and where what matters sooner than later is to have the most powerful (i.e. best performing) toy.
Tell you one thing, I got a 4S, and see no point in upgrading to an iPhone 5, or any other new incarnation with the same screen.
But a 4.6-4-8 inch iPhone Plus?
