Word for Mac crashes with Autorecovery

Hi,
I'm having issues with Word for Mac. I'll be working on a document and when the autorecovery starts saving the file word quits without completing the save. The file is not in the autorecovery file and I lose all my work.

How do I fix this ?

What version of Word? 2008, 2011? Have you tried updating the Office suite through Microsoft Autoupdate?
