Would This Optical Drive Work?

So, I pried my optical drive out of it's casing since it was stuck. A disc was in it so I took it out. Everything was in-tact, except for a small dent in the ribbon near the lens. Here's what it looks like:


I only needed it for one occasion since my rMBP doesn't have an optical drive. Didn't want to go out and buy another one. Would it work?

Does the tray have to be pushed back into the "box"?

Technically, I don't believe so. But there is likely some sort of physical mechanism that will prevent it from using the drive unless it has been retracted.
