Help with leaks instrument

I am trying to see if my command line program written in c++ has any leaks. If I profile my app, Instruments opens up and I click on leaks. It will record for 2 seconds and then stop. If I hit record again, it won't even record for 1 second. I followed a tutorial on using leaks which included a iphone program and I was able to use the leak detector to find memory leaks, but I can't seem to figure out how to get it to work with my app. Any help would be appreciated.
