VLC only shows video in full screen???

Hello keepers of the truth and wisdom,

I'm running the most current VLC on 10.7.5 and for some reason it only shows video in full screen. When watching with a smaller window, the video is a faint silhouette. How can I fix this? I've messed with the preferences with no luck. And I hope no one says "use a different player" as I've liked vlc for years.

HD/user/library/preferen./

delete org.videolan.vlc folder than open vlc...

I tried this but that folder is not on my computer nor did I see anything in library mentioning vlc.
