Problems exporting iMovie project

Is there a file size limit when exporting films from iMovie?

Im having problems exporting my latest iMovie project to my macbooks hard drive. Ive been happily creating & exporting films in iMovie for some time now, mostly short 5 min 1080p videos filmed with my GoPro Hero 3 camcorder. But yesterday I created a 23 minute project in iMovie and tried exporting in 1080p to Finder. It took 7 hrs and in the end the movie was nowhere to be found in Finder. I tried a second time but failed again!

I then managed to export it in a much lower resolution, but everytime I try in 1080p it fails after 7 hrs.

Is there a file limit that im exceeding by chance? Should I restrict myself to making shorter films?
