I only shut my MBP down at night or when travelling longer distances (in a car or plane) with it. When I carried it around university I just put it to sleep when I wasn't using it. I do the same with my MBA (the one I carry around now).

MacBook Pro: Sleep or Shut Down?

Decided to post in an old thread instead of start a new one...
But is sleeping or shutting down safer for the hard drive if it's going to be moving in a bumpy situation (literally)? For instance, in a backpack riding a bicycle and going over many bumps. Is sleeping or shutting down better for the hard drive in that situation?
I've had my hard drive fail recently in a 1+ year old MBP. I'm wondering if it has to do with my recent bike riding...

If you MBP has no SSD HD, then it could be not too much appropriate those bumps which you have everyday (even shutting down)... If you have a SSD, there is no problem anyway...
Hi, I've been using iMac and MB for about a year. But I have never heard of the Sleep/Shutdown issue about Macs. Anyway getting to the point now, I just bought a 2011 13'' MBP. Been using it for 2 weeks already, and I shut it down every day.
So upon stumbling across some topics, I have read about the Sleep/Shutdown issue. And looks like ALMOST every Mac user doesn't shutdown their Macs. Whether your MBP is on your desk, on your bed or even travelling.
One question though, is it needed to like have a routine of like shutting it down at least once a week? Or doesn't really matter?
But I might as well put my MBP to Sleep instead of shutting it down.
