Help me please! Get me out of this KP frustration.

I have tried all my best, and finally am posting here. Below is a little bit of history:

I do have a early 2009 Mac Pro desktop with 2.66 GHz Quad-Core Intel Xeon with the default NVidia graphics card.

Later I upgraded my machine with 16 GB RAM 4x4 from RamJet and I purchased ATI Radeo HD 5870 1GB graphics card.

I do have 3 monitors whereas two are connected with my HD 5870. I had been happily running my stable snow leopard version, and i mainly use this machine for final cut pro, photoshop and after effects. ( i pray my machine doesn't get KP while am writing this lol)

Couple of months ago, all of a sudden my monitors will go black for few seconds and come back. I tried software update, and nothing helped. Finally i got Kernal Panic, and i did reinstall my snow leopard from the scratch. I did it couple of times, even tried Leopard version believing it could help.

After lots of frustration, I decided to move to mountain lion which i never wanted to because it doesn't support FCP 7 and also many other softwares that i purchased.

I did install mountain lion, and it didn't help either. I started getting lots of kernal panics. Just let my machine run for few minutes, and it just goes gray and when i reboot it doesn't even detect my other two monitors.

I called Apple care, posted on apple forum, and even took my machine to genius bar where they have tested this machine for extensive 5 days and told its' the RAM. I have already replaced my RAM once within these 4 years, and now called RAMJET again, and they sent new set of RAM's.

I replaced all new RAM's and am still getting kernal panic. I can't do any damn thing, and display is also a problem.

I can't figure out what could be the issue. I sent the latest log to ramjet, and they said, it looks like a power supply management issue.

In one of the macrumour thread i found this smcfancontrol app which i dont know much about. I ran it, and i see my machine temp is 91F* and 826 rpm.

I am terribly frustrated, and am tired of installing OS's 10 times, and carrying my mac around the globe.

What could be the issue? What do i need to change?

At first I thought GPU issues, but there is more than one problem here which leads me to think you might have faulty RAM sticks...try pulling a couple out, re boot and repeat the process. If the mac becomes stable, I'd say you have a couple of bad sticks in there.

thanks for your quick response. i just got this new set of ram's and ramjet person said these are brand new, and tested. he don't mind doing the retest on all the ram's again.

but do you really think it's ram causing this issue?

could you please let me know the what process that you want me to follow to rule out this ram issue?

like first pull out the first two and try etc. is it not possible to find which exact slot causing this issue? thought the log might point out the slot.

please advise.

by the way, FIRST TIME i have unhooked two of my external monitors connected to my 5870 HD graphics card and observing if my machine is stable. it looks like... i dont know. it's been more than 20 mins it's been stable.

I guess bad memory in one place or another would be the #1 cause of kernal panics if we could get world wide stats for all the kernel panics and resolve them conclusively. :D

Number one or not they're pretty high up on the list. Probably the top five are all hardware related... (I guess).

But hmmm...

New set of RAM and the KP's are still persisting? <shrug> How about the RAM riser boards? Clean connections and everything? How many DIMMs total do you have installed?

Need any advice on how to clean?

All those 0xffffffxxx addresses are video related I think. Are you using mini DVI and/or active mini DVI-D adapters? You might be having some conflicts between the GPU and normal RAM being triggered by [invisible/unstable] glitches on those adapters. BTW the 8 series GPU is not completely bug-free I've heard. I didn't read your full post, but did you upgrade to Mountain Lion? Could be the solution. EDIT: never mind, you did upgrade and didn't help. I just read it.

BTW I would start troubleshooting by putting the power management set to never sleep monitors and hard drives, and never sleep the computer. Then, leave just one monitor connected to the DVI port and see if the KP happens. I bet it won't.

Possible too GPU could also have bad VRAM...as far as testing the RAM is concerned just because they are new, it doesn't mean they are okay. Pull them in pairs, reboot, use the Mac as normal, then repeat the process, until you've tested them all....if none of that resolves the issue, then maybe put the old card in if you still have it? Or borrow one prior to deciding that the graphics card is the culprit.

@Tesselator: What is RAM riser board? I do have 4 slots, and i do have 4 x 4gb = 16 GB ram installed. It's all brand new.

@MacProFreak:
NVidia: (default) I use DVI.
ATI 5870 HD: DVI to HDMI & DVI to Mini HDMI
At this moment i switched my bigger size monitor which has DVI to HDMI to NVidia (which i have always connected this monitor to my 5870 HD).

At this moment still my machine is running smooth. I am thinking it could be my 5870 graphics card causing this issue? What should i do? I paid over $500 couple of years ago to buy this card :( I badly need 3 monitors for my editing work.

Please advise.

Well, that's why apple will tell customers to not use any monitors that are not from them. It's stupid, but all you need to get a KP is one bit out of place, and who knows what other manufacturer's monitors send back through the wires.

Sorry I missed to notice this reply Macmac45. To be honest, first time in the past few months my mac has been stable since i plugged out two of my external monitors from 5870 HD card. It pretty much seem to be a graphics card issue.

What's the option i got now? If my machine has KP again, then i will do the RAM pulling out test. Thank you so much!

If the 5870 has 2 DVIs it is flashed.

Could be a bad flash or a bad card.

Good news it is super easy to figure out.

Remove the 5870 and see if KPs keep happening.

If that doesn't fix it, put back 5870 and remove 8800.

If that doesn't solve it, it isn't GPU issue.

Thanks! At this moment, i did not remove the 5870 but just unplugged the monitor. It is giving me lot of confirmation that the issue could be a 5870 card which was causing this KP.

And when the monitors were flashing it was not only those 2 monitors but all 3 were blacking out.

Now let's say if it's a 5870 card -is it possible to get a replacement? I purchased it on December 16th 2010 from apple website which is "ATI Radeon HD 5870 1GB-ZML".

Generally speaking Apple does the standard 1 year warranty. However, in the past I've found that some upgraded parts had extended warranties from their actual manufacturers. It's worth checking into but you'll want to dig up all your documentation from that purchase beforehand.

Something is crashing power management kext.
It could be failed/misbehaving current sensor.
Get iStat or another software that can monitor current sensors and check if there are any weird reads (extremely high or low). Apple Hardware Test (or ASD 3s132) will be worth to try too. AHT is mostly useless, but it detects sensor failures. If you'll get any errors – post codes here.
If you didn't try SMC reset, try it too.

OK, when diagnosing tech issues it is kind of important to actually know what is going on.

Are you actually saying that you are using adaptors that go FROM MDP to DVI on a display? Or are you saying what this looks like, that the card has a DVI port that is being adapted to HDMI and another DVI port that is being adapted to Mini HDMI?

A REAL APPLE 5870 has 3 ports on it for output. 1 is DVI and there are 2 MDP. If your card has anything beyond those outputs, it is a flashed one and you didn't buy it from Apple.

If you want to remove a GPU from the suspects list you have to REMOVE IT FROM THE COMPUTER. As long as it is inside, it loaded kexts at boot and those drivers are running, whether you have display connected or not.

Half measures get you half answers. If you want to know for sure, REMOVE THE CARD.

You will get much more relevant help if you are exact with your descriptions and use the right words.

Your components could be overheating. If you have an air compressor or know of someone who does, I suggest that you remove the video cards, and blow them out, blow out the power supply, and blow out the CPU heatsinks.
