Ookla has updated its Speedtest.net iOS app with iPhone 5 support, the ability to remove advertising with a $0.99 in-app purchase, improved server selection and easier sharing -- since the whole point of an app that measures the connection speed is so users can gloat to their friends.

The app allows users to check their ping, upload and download speeds from servers located all over the world.
What's New in Version 3.0

- Completely new interface with full iPhone 5 support
- Option to permanently remove advertising
- Easier result sharing
- Improved server selection and saving
- Sortable results
- See your testing location in results detail
- This release is English only and translations will come in the next update

Is there any doubt that AT&T and Verizon have "preferential" connections to these speed test servers thus giving higher #s?

The unfortunate part of this update .... each test now burns 80 MB of data per test

What are everyone's pings?

I've reset my counter twice and got the same amount of data use per test.

I've been pinging around 72-75 when mine uses roughly 25MB per test.
I pinged one at 69 and it used 35MB. But at 177 it only used 8MB.

My results have been all over the place since updating. Severs are probably seeing a lot of action.

Just did another bunch of tests

I've always used a further server for my testing, it's about 31 KMs and the closest server to me is 2 KMs never gives me the right speed results since they're so congested.

I'm in the Toronto/Markham area

1) Oakville server retest burned 50mb with results of 30mb DL & 12mb UL

2) Toronto server burned 35mb w/ inaccurate speeds of 5.1mb DL & 17mb UL

The amount of data it uses is directly related to the speed of your test. If you have an amazing LTE connection like yours (which I'm quite jealous of BTW), it'll use more data.

I just tried this over EDGE and it consumed a few hundred KB in both directions.
