An alternative to the superb Airdroid is Android File Transfer.

AFT will not work with Samsung phones (S3 or Note 2) and a Mac. I think previous Samsung models like the S2 did though. And all Nexus devices work with AFT.
Airdroid is the best and easiest option to transfer files to/from Samsung's newer phones to/from a Mac. Or use the SD card.
