Apple COMPUTER need to be putting more energy into making better computers.. the last Mac mini "update" for instance was a joke. They seem to concentrate on Music/iPods now, in fact, I bet the vast majority of the general public would now associate Apple with the iPod/iTunes rather than computer hardware. If you asked anyone in the street what came to mind when you said "Apple", I bet few would say iMac, iBook or Powerboook.

yup - which is why they are making more money now than ever.

am i wrong or is this thread slowly falling asleep?
is everybody just expecting the itunes phone now, no more rumours or hope for ipod video?

just 4 days to go, come on....

You forgot that DVDs use MPEG 2, whilst these devices will be using MPEG 4 / H.264.

You're right, I forgot about that. What I wonder about the possibility of an iPod video or iPhone with video playback... wouldn't it need a good enough processor, especially for H.264? Unless we were watching 10fps video at 320x240 or less resolution, I think the device would need a good enough processor wouldn't it?

I guess there isn't much else to say for the moment. Everybody's waiting for next wednesday. Will we be dissappointed or not?

I'm guessing the event won't be so "special" after all. Wouldn't be surprising to not see anything major at all in next week's event or in Paris. Apple must be working like mad to go back to the computer company it was 2-3 years ago. The irony is that Apple hadn't made so much profit until the iPod, which is what their main focus is right now.

I'm predicting a phone based on the Moto e680. It has a 320x240 screen that works in landscape or portrait. It has MPEG4 and RealVideo decoders in it. It's Linux based, runs a fast Intel chip, has stereo speakers and bluetooth and camera and FM radio and Java and 3D graphics and tons more. That would make a decent phone, music player, and video player in your pocket. It syncs via a fast mini USB port. Seems fine for viewing video newscasts and podcasts and such. And it's very customizable meaning Apple can sink it's teeth into it (as can we geeks.)

It is falling asleep

There's no more inteligence. We know something is coming. The iPhone will happen, what else if anything? There is a video blogging event at some Apple stores the next day. Roxy from New Music Teacher says that next week's Podcast will "blow your mind". What could it be? Until AppleInsider chimes in with their outlook on the iPod AV, we have no more new info.

For these types of devices, a hardware video decoding chip is used.

God, you guys have some dude post Steve Jobs' entire speech and you still think it's going to be the iPhone only. C'mon people!

He was right last time wasn't he?

Mark my words: an iPod music and video phone, all in one!

Hot Lady: "Slap!"

I don't even want to imagine what could happen in a work setting!

That phone which is more like a PDA, looks awesome. Could we really expect something with so many features from Apple? Not to say that Apple's products aren't great in so many ways, but they always seem to lack quite a few features that competitor's products already include. Portable video? They couldv'e already done it probably a year ago. They always seem to come up with a reasonable excuse as to why they don't put a certain feature in something. Another good example would be the Shuffle's lack of screen. I think a music player always needs some kind of visual feedback.

What I think will make this type of phone so attractive to Apple is that it is a good hardware platform, with completely replaceable software. Instead of being locked into a small-time operating system made and updated by a third partty like Motorola, it is Linux based. They can add/delete/replace almost anything. They could strip it to the kernel and put in their own software from the ground up, or just replace the UI with their own, or just add some software to what is there, or any combination. As with OSX, they can implement a software update system that pushes new software to everyone's device periodically. This could let them evolve the phone over time into a great iPhone/iTunes/iVideo unit, or whatever else they have in mind.

It's the software flexibility that makes a phone like the Moto e680 irresistible to Apple. That's my theory. If they're going to offer a phone whose hardware is designed by a third party, how could they NOT use one whose software can be molded so completely?

Hmm. Trying to accumulate posts quickly? There's the forums section for that. You're guesses are jokes, right?

Something I've noticed about Apple announcements is that we usually build up a lot of hype about what is going to be released, wait impatiently until the day of the announcement, look at the product, like the design, but notice there are some features missing. After that we try to justify as to why it didn't include this or it didn't include that, but the prices are rarely justifiable.
So although a device similar to the e680 would be an awesome product for a PDA-phone-type-of-device, I don't think we should expect it with too much anticipation. I think those who do will be quite dissappointed. Maybe we should be a little more realistic and just wait to see the Moto phone with iTunes, updated Minis with Flash, updated Shuffles (larger capacity only) and white iPods with more space as well. Thinksecret pretty much tells us what we should expect. And as they say, the iPod video which is something too uncertain, would be the only product that I think could actually be considered as something "new" and would be enough for Apple to justify the invitation's "here we go again", although it isn't something revolutionary. (It's not as if there aren't many portable devices that can playback video already).

i don´t agree with thinksecret on this.

releasing only the itunes phone would be a disappointment for nearly everyone, as there have been rumours for months about it.
and it´s definitely nothing revolutionary, as there are already so many mp3-phones on the market. would be ridiculous to compare it with the first ipod release.
...
anyone else sad that more and more people think it won´t be the ipod video?

Well I could imagine that Apple and Motorola would work the marketing machine to MAKE the itunes phones revolutionary.

It's a sad sign that people are expecting less and less innovation and ingenuity from Apple.

Latest info on coming event

My sources tell me that the new ipod mini (flash) will come in two sizes. 2Gbyte and 4Gbyte. They will come with a new name- no longer called iPod Mini. Certain to receive two broken legs if the name is released.

Yes, the iPod Video is on the slate for announcement. Friends have seen it but they will not give any details (ugh).

Wednesday is not going to be a light-duty announcement centering on some (yawn) new Motorola phone. Rather, it is going to be a "landmark event in the evolution of digital entertainment" according to VIP invitees. All hints point to a content store for video content and updates to Airport Express (video output).

Anybody know of a live feed for the event?

I hope your right.

I just can't see Apple having an entire event about the Phone. People have known about it for months.

I could care less about the iPod Mini. Video is what I'm interested in.

As for the Live Feeds, I don't think they do that anymore, however usually a few hours after the event has taken place they post it up on apple.com

Sweet. Any mention of pricing for any of the above?
