Okay, here's my story. I walked into the Apple Store with an unlocked ATT version with the ending serial being DTTP. I am running on T-Mobile. My sleep button wasn't working and I wanted a replacement. I told the guy I had the T-Mobile version and he looked on his screen and apparently tried to find out if they had any replacements for that version, which they didn't. So he ordered one and told me to come back. Will this version be the T-Mobile unlocked version or my old one?

Here's the email I got:

Repair Estimate
Item Number Description Price Amount Due
661-6847 iPhone 5, GSM, 16GB, White $ 0.00 $ 0.00
S4897Z/A IPHONE 5 FLAT RATE REPAIR RETAIL-INT $ 229.00 $ 0.00
Total (Tax not included) $ 229.00 $ 0

Technically there isn't a "T-Mobile" version of the phone, just an updated a1428 GSM model that officially supports T-Mobile native 3G band. That why apple employees look confuse when customers ask for a T-Mobile model, because Apple sells it as a unlock device with T-Mobile sim. Even the new AT&T iPhone 5 should ship with the T-Mobile 3G band, given that the carrier received the new shipments out. The chance of you getting the updated version might not as be high, since Apple is clearing the old inventory of the old a1428 GSM model. In about a few months, I'm pretty sure that Apple replacements would be stocked with the updated a1428 model.

Do you get to see the serial number in advance? The new model ends with one of these combinations: FH19, FH1C, FH1D, FH1F, FH1G, or FH1H.

The brand new models aren't even all the Tmobile version yet so it will probably be a while before the new model trickles down to the refurb units.

Got the new tweaked version!! Sadly it's on 6.1.3...

You mean you got the t-mobile version?

If your on 6.1.3 don't worry, I got mine on 6.1.2 and by stupidity upgraded to 6.1.3 :( you can still access CDN so you'll be ok, unless you wanted the tethering feature active.

Sorry I mean to say Cellular Data Network (CDN), where you can still access to change APN settings. :)

Look at mine, I'm on 6.1.3 too and still have access to CDN.

Well I tought it would not be accessible after the 6.1.3 update and the carrier update.

The only thing not accessible is the tethering apn settings after the carrier update. Which version of 6.1.x you are on does not matter.

Every other US carrier blocks editing of the APN settings. T-Mobile allows it except for tethering apns.

Yes I understand now. Coming from AT&T, their carrier update or whatever it's call the database Apple stores for AT&T completely removes CDN access and I'm happy t-mobile didnt do this.

Getting back to the OP's post, I also thought this was a reason why he was missing on 6.1.3, but would make more sense it was the tethering feature...I happened to mention both ok.

Correct that was my point, thank you.

Did they give you new in box iPhone (headphones, usb cable, etc)? People trying to exchange unlocked iPhones have mostly reported that Apple doesn't have warranty iPhones yet that work with T-Mobile and have to give you a full retail iPhone. I am assuming this is what happened with you?

Yes, I checked the model number.

what model number do you have because there are many...differentiating between A1428 old and A1428 is going to become a lot more complicated than it already is....they both have many different model numbers and apple hasnt provided 1 key thing that can tell the difference..if you can do me a favor please report your model number to my thread as it will help us all in the coming months differentiate between A1428 old and new

Yes please state your model number.

I think it is: MD is original AT&T, ND is refurbished AT&T, ME is T-Mobile tweaked version, NE is refurbished T-Mobile tweaked version.

Apple has gotten it self into a mess...I think best way to identify the models is via Apple's internal item numbers....like 661-6847 or 661-6846.....

MobilSyrup has reported a MD294C/A working on Wind Mobile Canada AWS 1700/2100 (Same as T-Mobile)...I have the exact same model purchased on OCT 05 2012...no AWS...

https://forums.macrumors.com/threads/1572942/

so relying on ND or NE is jus fooling one self...

The Phones that work with tmobiles AWS would have one of these at the end of the serial number

FH19
FH1C
FH1D
FH1F
FH1G
FH1H

Mine has FH1H and it works perfectly with their AWS.

the first pics and reports from members had serial numbers ending with anything but a combo of the 4 mentioned above, that is why I started my thread, please read my post and refer to link as well to see...
