Apple has added new storage options to its iMac lineup, allowing users to choose either a 256 GB or 512 GB flash storage drive as part of the order customization process. The new options are available as $300 and $600 surcharges respectively to replace the 1 TB traditional hard drive that is standard across all iMac models.

Previously, the 21.5-inch iMac had not been available with dedicated flash storage options, only offering the standard 1 TB traditional hard drive and a $250 Fusion Drive option. Apple's Fusion Drive marries a 128 GB flash drive with a 1 TB traditional hard drive to seamlessly provide fast access to most-used files while also offering relatively cheap mass storage for the remainder of the user's storage needs. Those options remain available, but for those looking for an all-flash storage solution, Apple is now offering that in 256 and 512 GB capacities.

For the 27-inch iMac, Apple did previously offer an all-flash storage solution, but only as a 768 GB drive carrying a $900 upgrade fee. The 27-inch iMac is also available with 1 TB and 3 TB traditional hard drive options, with each of those also available in a Fusion Drive configuration. But with the addition of 256 GB and 512 GB flash options, Apple is now offering users who do not need massive amounts of storage the ability to maximize speed on their machines.

(Thanks, Steve!)

so apple is basically telling us, "do not be an early adopter."

They seem to always make the most logical updates a few months into a products life cycle.

Originally our options were normal HD, fusion, or a freaking $1000 756 SSD!

The moment I've been waiting for. All flash in the 21.5 iMac instead of a 1TB 5400 RPM. I can now purchase my new iMac. 256GB for $300 seems reasonable, but frankly the Fusion should be standard OR a 128GB SSD.

I might have considered that if it was an option when I bought my iMac a few weeks ago but (21" 2.9 GHz Intel Core i5; 1tb slow spinning HD) but I can live without an SSD for one more generation. I just don't see why they didn't off this to begin with. I wonder why they waited this long.

300$ for the 256gb seems ok if you compare it with the 1tb fusion for 250$..... but wtfff for the 512gb...? are they nuts with that price?

an additional 600 for 512GB? what a joke and that's on top of the standard drive so that about $800.. just stupid.

Can't believe the standard drive is 5400RPM. What a joke.

Wait for it - you'll be told that 5400 RPM is "good enough" and why the Mac is still better than a PC even with an antiquated, slow HD that costs stupid-high amounts of money.

For example, the iMac is thin! Take THAT, Microsoft Fanboys!!

They should also offer new Fusion drive options which combines larger flash drives with normal HDDs.

Glad to see this. I have a 256 ssd in my 2011 and (although it's not the fastest ssd in the world) I couldn't go back to a standard hd now, even a fusion drive.

I think Apple is trying to make up for the reduced margin for including SSD as standard in MBA. Desktop users will be paying extra Apple tax.
