Defensive? I was actually kind of hoping that we -knew- the cost and I simply wasn't aware of it. D:

Umm, you actually can. All it needs is your own app that you can write which can interface the same way google now interfaces with the hardware out there. Add sound input to it and you can speak to the app and it will do the same things. Only difference is it is not OS baked but a standalone app, but it does the job the same way.

At our university the award winning project was controlling a custom home made traffic control system through a self-written iOS app on an iPod touch. The same was done a year later on an android tablet by another person. Bottom line, both platforms support it, the implementation is different.

Oh sorry I thought you were trying to be condescending by asking me, my bad 🙂 (i learned to expect that kinda stuff)

No idea the cost but it seems like you'd have to get special light fixtures that can connect to wifi, and that can actually process the input, etc.
although I'm sure you could set it up with a raspberry pi or something for like $50 if you have the know-how.

Who will make it feasible to do first, I wonder? I mean for the average person who has no clue how to do any of this setup for either.

Wow, that does sound kind of expensive.

A raspberry pi might be a cheaper way, but it sounds like it'd be a more ... difficult way.
 
I can't turn the lights off and on in my home with my smartphone??!! What am I going to do? Seriously this is a cool thing to see demonstrated but not something most people really need to do with a phone.
 
You can do this on the iphone. Just combine any number of home automation apps with home cinema automation apps already available and use the contacts hack to enable voice control. You'd have to make a contact for every action but someone could do it tomorrow if they wanted.
 
A while back I set up my raspberry pi and siri to open my garage door when I told her to. Found a tutorial on the raspberry pi forums. I could do way more, but I don't have the money to buy the stuff.

You really don't even need a phone at all for home automation. You could make up your own remote. Talking uses more energy then pressing a button, so I ditched my siri garage door rig. Cool to try though.

Mi casa Verde working with Z-wave is impressive but I don't run my house like a DJ club so a lot of the functionality is wasted on me.

Some major geeks do stuff like this and it gets the Android fanboys in a tizzy. And this coming from a Galaxy Nexus and Nexus 7 user, too. I like my gadgets, but I don't get personal like the people who start these threads.

...even though home Automation has been on iOS for years.
 
I hope that when the time comes for me to use my phone to command my bath to start running as I am driving home, that 10 minutes later it automatically calls the plumber, plasterer and electrician to sort out the damaged caused by the flood after I forgot to "end task".

TBH, the only times I use my phone for something similar, is to control my sonos wireless music system around the house, and only then because the dedicated remote from sonos costs a couple of hundred quid, whereas the app is free.

As I go to bed, on my way out of the living room I reach out and switch the light out as I walk past the switch, I had already completed the onerous task of picking up the remote from the side table next to me to switch off the TV.

Living in Northern England, I often find myself gazing southwards in jealousy at the automation that exists across the divide in southern England, but console myself knowing that they drink beer with no head and normally a sissy "top" of lemonade to help their delicate throats as they drink it. 🙂

Haha but we are softer than you Northerners. Everyone knows you all work in the pits and eat Fish on a Friday 😛 🙂
