Sync Google Contacts

I have found the accounts under contacts preferences and under on my mac I have enabled sync contact with google, entered my email and password and it has accepted these. A sync icon has appears on the status bar at the top and I can click it to make it sync but I can't see any contacts yet.

I have restarted and turned off iCloud contacts as well and yet the contacts are still empty.

Any ideas, I have access to my contacts on iPhone, iPad and through Gmail as well so I know they are there...
