Indeed, I created a boot bale USB stick. Any idea how to get the recovery disk back in action?

I used this guide to create a bootable USB - https://forums.macrumors.com/threads/1594017/

It can be done but requires a bit of work in terminal. Link bellow.

Another simpler way would be to reinstall Mavericks using the original installer in the dmg like you would do if you were doing an update.

Mavericks OS X clean install

For any one who having problems with the clean install 10.9 and have a newer version of iMac, Macbook Air, or Pro. Restart the computer and hold down option-command and r. This is going to connect to you to apple server so you can re download 10.8 update and then reinstall 10.9. I just had to this process on my Macbook Air and iMac both newer model with CD drives. So Just found out apple has servers for the recovery process.

Correct. The internet reinstall is nothing new.

Fix Recovery Partition on Mavericks

Just follow the tutorial below and Create the bootable pen drive by the Terminal by createinstallmedia method. After this you will erase all the HD (of course if you already did your backup) and do a clean install.
If you tried by Disk Utility you are probably without the Recovery Partition now on your Mac.
This is the tutorial: http://osxdaily.com/2013/10/23/create-os-x-mavericks-install-drive/
