I don't think Mac gamers are hardcore gamers... A hardcore gamer just buy a gaming rig or a xbox/ps...

The exact point I started off with. We still get great OpenCL and OpenGL performance, and if gaming is your priority, why are you buying a mac?

It's also being compared to a desktop card, so the performance comparison will likely stand. Until we get reviews that contradict the Anand review, I'm inclined to believe it.

as i have mentioned, those numbers can be artificially jacked up to make it look better and realistic at the same time.

always take those reviews with a grain of salt.

There's no laptops released with it because its stupid to buy for any manufacturer other than apple. Other companies will push the dGPU over battery life so theres no point in paying for both a 5200 and a dGPU for cost reasons. You wouldn't even be seeing intel push the edram graphics package if it wasn't for apple since no one else cared at this point.

i think you might be right, windows gaming laptop vendors actually went for the HD4600 quads rather than HD5200

As somebody who doesn't play games on my laptop, I've got to say the shift from a dGPU to an iGPU which will save me power and emit far less heat whilst not showing any less performance for the tasks I need is quite a huge step forward.

I understand the gamers being upset, but surely the will still have a dGPU option for BTO machines.

I'd just like gamers to state upfront why they are unhappy about the iGPU because they are gamers. Casual readers of this thread may get the wrong idea.

A bit of disclosure goes a long way.

i'm not a gamer, and i'm upset mainly because i use it for rendering tasks other than gaming.

I do not understand people getting all bent out of shape out ditching discrete graphics for Iris Pro 5200 in the 15" model and saying they'll get this years model instead. In OpenCL and OpenGL benchmarks (what PROS would care about), Iris Pro is as good as or significantly better than the GT 650 in the current rMBP. Yeah, it does worse in gaming, but you shouldn't be buying a Mac if gaming is THAT important to you. Check Anandtech if you don't believe me.

http://www.anandtech.com/show/6993/intel-iris-pro-5200-graphics-review-core-i74950hq-tested/17

And it will still play games at medium settings, its just not as good at gaming (again, is this a priority for MacBooks?) as a dGPU.

Read those charts again.

OpenCL performance is up.

But OpenGL performance (read: gaming) is DOWN. Waaaaaayyyyyy down.

Through my work, I ordered two stock MacBook Pros (13" retina and 15" classic) on Monday, July 8th. It says 3-5 business days shipping on their website. They emailed me yesterday telling me there's a delay & they won't ship until July 23rd.

Reminds me when - back in the days - I bought a white Macbook right when they switched to the unibody white enclosure. I received a similar email before it was even announced. A couple days later it showed up online. I immediately thought I was gonna return it upon delivery but to my surprise, I had been upgraded to the unibody one. I think the timeline is quite interesting re: 7/23 and the speculation around a potential announcement the day of/right after the earnings report. Food for thoughts.

You shouldn't say these things, nerd hearts everywhere might burst.

This is definitely the only group/forum that I frequent where there is rumbling about the end of July. We will either be ecstatic or crushed.

I guess that there are a lot of casual gamers that don't want to maintain a dedicated gaming machine in addition to a good mobile laptop. For those, loosing the dGPU would be a big loss, essentially forcing them to buy last years model.

In my case, I have a 2011 15'' model, so a better GPU might be an incentive to upgrade. On the other hand, if the dGPU goes away, I might consider a 13'' Air + an iMac instead. I'm not sure though if I want to miss out on the retina screen.

I know. I try to ignore it myself. But that's exactly how it worked for me before. The anxiety level is high at this point. Ridiculous, we're fantasizing about a computer guys. o_O

Pretty much, but hey, boredom at work frees the mind :p

i'm not a gamer, and i'm upset mainly because i use it for rendering tasks other than gaming.

But (if we talk 3D renderers) 9/10 of all renderers use CPU and not GPU

----------

Yes, I want to know what this means for Photoshop and Illustrator as well. I mean with the potential loss of dGPU but with the varied performance gains of the iris pro.

It would probably be faster than with 650.

Iris Pro uses much faster edram, so OpenCL would definitely benefit from that.

Yeah...

They bring out a laptop with the highest resolution (laptop) screen on the market...

...and then they scale down graphics performance that's necessary to take advantage of the display.

Logic not found...

its not highest resolution laptop screen on the market

there is FUJITSU UH90 with 3200x1800 IGZO panel you can buy it now in japan :)

and its all iGPU :)

Hello guys !

This if my first post on MacRumors but i read all your messages since a year.
I am running a MBP Santa Rosa (2,2Ghz C2D, 2007) as my only machine so you might understand how eager I am to play around with an Haswell MBPr or MBA.

I am still undecided between MBA 13", MBPr 13" or MBPr15" but i think i am not the only one in this case.

About the debate "dGPU or not dGPU", I prefer having an homogeneous machine without a dGPU and losing a bit in the game side, because it optimize battery life, heat dissipation and noise. Moreover it facilitate the support of the machine, without needing some tweeks like Mavericks to improve battery life by switching between the dGpu and iGpu. That's my 2 cents thought.
Hope the new MBPr will be out soon.

;)

Based on that last part, it seems to me you need to ask yourself the following questions in this order:

1. Does the retina screen make a huge difference to you? (if you said no, then the 13" MBA should be just fine especially since it prioritizes battery life)
2. If yes to the above, then which size rMBP? 13" or 15"?

The best way to answer these questions would be to spend some time in an Apple store (if possible) and use each machine to decide which form factor you like best.

The plot thickens. This 15-inch retina I ordered at work on July 10th is also delayed. Just got this email...

Interesting none-the-less. Configure-to-order Mac minis I ordered on the 11th will arrive this Friday from China, according to the tracking info I received.

Meanwhile this is what the order status of my other order looks like online...

it happened on many occasions.
but the only shipping delays on a certain product that lead to refresh is the iMac, January 2011.

happens on September 2012, Mac Mini delay - iPhone refresh.
https://forums.macrumors.com/threads/1434528/

happens on December 2010, MBA delay - Nothing released.
https://discussions.apple.com/thread/2672599?start=0&tstart=0

well theres a lot more out there in google.
It could be they are relocating resources, short of components and stuff.

as much as i wanted to believe, iphone rumors are really hot ATM...
lets hope that they are releasing macbooks, and not iphones ...
