The Application Candy Bar Does Work, But For Those Who Like Me Like To Do Things For Themselves. You Can Also Go To "/System/Library/CoreServices/Dock.app/Contents/Resources/finder.png" There You Can Change The Finder Icon, The Trash Icon, And Even The Little Poof Thing When You Get Rid Of Dock Files, I Made Mine Black. >> I have done all of these steps but do not know what to do to actually change the picture could you please supply me with the next idiot proof steps

Do you have Snow Leopard?
I've noticed that since I upgraded to Snow Leopard, just my finder icon changed back to normal (the others stayed the same).
So I don't know if it has something to do with that.

Summary

Just found this thread via Google, and would like to summarize the conclusions for any other searchers. This works on all systems up to and including Mountain Lion.

  1. You need to be the admin
  2. Go to /System/Library/CoreServices/Dock.app/Contents/Resources
You can do this by navigating in Finder or via Go -> Go to Folder...
  3. Change finder.png and finder@2x.png to your new icons (in png)
  4. Change any other icons you would like to change in the same folder
  5. Reboot the computer. When the display goes black, press and hold [shift] until a status bar appears below the 
  6. When prompted to login, do so, or reboot again to exit safe mode
  7. Enjoy your new icons

Candybar is now free (it's been discontinued but worked perfectly fine for me on 10.8), and is what I used to change my Finder icon. It may be able to fix your problem if you have lost your icon.

I'm running mavericks 10.9 hence why I posted here

So, I have changed the finder.png and the finder128.png files with new ones, restarted my computer in safe boot, but it just comes up with a blank icon.

I attached a screen shot.

Can anybody tell me how to get the icon working?

I'm running Mac OS X Version 10.7.5

A easier way is go to System/Library/CoreServices/Finder.app

----------

A easier way is go to System/Library/CoreServices/Finder.app
Then drag a image onto the icon in the top left corner.
Next on terminal and type "killall Dock" with out quotation marks
Then it should change the icon

Try this icyborg
